Weekend Wind-Down Party #8

Hello Friends and Happy Fri-Yay!

Can you believe this is the last Friday in February?  It’s sad to see time flying but I don’t think any of us will miss the snowy season and with only 21 days until Spring, we can all  “GOODBYE FEBRUARY!”.

As you read this I’m at the Sheraton Hotel participating in this year’s 2014 Goodwill Runway Show.  This is my first time working as a Stylist and am truly over-the-top excited!  Fellow blogger and friend, Whitney Nic James is covering the event so look forward to reading all about it next week.

JenJenHouse.com Prom Dresses

Disclosure: This is a sponsored  post for JenJenHouse.com via Sverve for which I will receive compensation, all opinions are 100% my own.

Our son, Malik will be graduating in May and he hadn’t even mentioned the Senior Prom, so last week when I asked if he was going, he just shrugged his shoulders and said, “yes”. I know having a son is much different than having a daughter, because by now she would have been talking non-stop about the Prom, and probably would have already found a dress.

Knowing me, I’d be more excited than she because both my Junior and Senior Prom dresses were handmade and neither were very good.  I would want her dress to be much better so that the event would be more memorable.  Thankfully, for mothers with Prom-bound daughters there are beautiful and affordable options available online at JenJenHouse.com

JenJen Prom Dress

JenJenHouse.com, carries a large selection of Prom Dresses to fit almost every budget and size, there’s even a custom “Made to Order” option available for many of the styles.

At JenJenHouse.com you’ll find Prom Dresses from sassy to sophisticated in various lengths, styles, and colors to suit many tastes.  They also carry a large selection of accessories to complete the perfect Prom outfit.

My son doesn’t have a steady girlfriend so at this point all he needs to worry about is matching his shirt and tie to his date’s dress color.

She on the other hand will have an opportunity to chose any color either to match the High School’s theme or if they are going as a group to find one that is different from the others.   JenJen Prom Dresses

I Got it @Goodwill

Hello Friends and Happy Hump Day Wednesday!

Last weekend we finally got a break in the cold winter weather with temperatures rising above 50 degrees, it felt almost summer like after all that freezing snow.  In celebration of the warm weekend I decided to wear this bright yellow twin-set sweater to church on Sunday – whew, that’s a mouthful!

I paired the thrifted sweater set with yet another thrifted find, a brown striped skirt.

Thrifted Sweater Set and Skirt

These Romance Soles kitten heel pumps were another fantastic thrifted find and if you remember, I also got them in Navy Blue.  This was the last post in which I wore them (click here).

Necklace - Rugged Wearhouse

The beaded necklace was a clearance purchase from Rugged Wearhouse for ($1.00) – #winning

Warm Day 6

This Rosetti purse was not thrifted, however, it was purchased from a Flea Market vendor in Florida for less than $20.00.

So what do you think about this week’s “I Got It @Goodwill” totally thrifted outfit (minus the accessories)?

Almost totally thrifted OOTD

Today I am linking up with my  FABU thriftinistas Whitney Nic James, and Shana over at ColorBlind, who kindly chose me Thrifters Anonymous Member of the  Week.

Midnight Velvet | #Giveaway #ad

Disclosure:  I received this item free of charge from Midnight Velvet.  No monetary compensation was received or offered, all opinions are 100% my own.

Growing up in Dover I remember getting excited every time a Midnight Velvet catalog came in the mail.  As soon as one arrived my grandmother and I would snuggle up on the sofa and flip through each page.  She loved the large colorful church hats, and I loved the shoes, jewelry and decorative tops.  I liked seeing the beautiful clothing the models wore, but always secretly wanted an animal print bedroom set, however, I knew my grandmother would have said, “no”.

Midnight Velvet Catalog

I still love looking through the pages of a Midnight Velvet catalog, and now I have an opportunity to review a product from their Spring 2014 catalog.  Of course I thought of my grandmother, knowing she would have been excited for me and wished I had chosen one of those big, colorful church hats.

Monte Carlo Gold Caftan However, for this review, I selected the Monte Carlo Gold Caftan.  It arrived in a zebra print box which I’ll definitely re-purpose later.  I loved that it was exactly as pictured in the catalog and fit perfectly.  The Caftan is two pieces with a machine washable polyester tank underneath.  Extra sequins are included for the nylon top which only needs to be spot cleaned.

The Monte Carlo Gold Caftan is perfect for a night out on the town with hubby or perhaps to a special church event which I know my grandmother would have liked.

Midnight Velvet

Midnight Velvet has fresh new Spring confident styles for a beautiful you and your home.  Check them out on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube,  and Pinterest, and be sure to follow their Beauty Blog for the latest fashions, styles and trends.

Super Foods for Seniors – Chapter 5

Hello Friends and Happy Monday

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and was able to get outside to enjoy the beautiful warm weather, it was definitely the best Saturday since the new year began.  Spring is right around the corner so it’s time to start thinking about ditching the bulky sweaters for more body revealing clothing which makes Chapter 5 of Super Foods for Seniors ~ Body Slimming Secrets perfectly timed. Super Foods for Seniors - Chapter 5 body slimming secrets

Menopause is making it very difficult for me to lose weight, even though I try to eat the right foods and limit my wine consumption, I know I need to increase calorie burning exercises.  However, in addition to exercise the following foods can help tame the fat and fight the flab.

  •  Tomatoes – tomato based foods to replace fats like gravies/sauces i.e. salsa
  • Barley – this grain has been listed as a Super Food in every chapter, it swells to make you full for longer periods of time

  • Black Beans – High in Fiber – eat more foods with high fiber to lose weight faster

  • Squash – Sweetened it up by sprinkling with cinnamon

  • Lemon Juice – Replace butter with lemon juice on veggies to rev up the flavor lemon juice

  • Spices – Rosemary, garlic, nutmeg, cinnamon, mint, etc. are taste boosters for low-cal dishes

  • Oats – nonfattening foods can improve your mood and stop you from overeating.

  • Brown Rice – healthy fiber to fill you up

  • Water – no explanation needed

  • Turkey – use ground turkey instead of ground beef

    #SwitchToTurkey

    #SwitchToTurkey

  • Green Tea – rejuvenates metabolism which helps burn more calories

  • Chestnuts – perfect lo-cal snack available September through February

  • Olive Oil – use instead of other fats and oils

  • Salmon – high in Omega-3 fatty acids aids in weight loss

  • Apples – a crisp apple to satisfy a craving for sweets

  • Creamy Yogurt – with fruit or as a veggie dip or potato topper

  • Turnip Greens – use in soup yogurt

  • Orange Juice – drink 1/2 hour before you eat

  • Applesauce – unsweetened as a substitute for butter or oil in baking

  • Popcorn – mid-afternoon snack topped with a dash of olive oil

  • Pear – high in fiber snack to make you feel full longer popcorn

  • Cottage Cheese – low fat or no fat to replace ricotta in your Italian recipes

  • Cayenne – spice up your dish with this fat burning spice, hot peppers or small amounts of Tabasco Sauce – which is great on popcorn as well

Smart steps to safe weight loss:

  • Eat only what you can burn

  • Control your portions

  • Eat more plant than animal foods

  • Exercise regularly

  • Keep a food diary

  • Set realistic goals

  • Don’t DIEt – just eat healthy

Most people want to lose a few pounds but eating the right foods alone won’t make it happen, it must be combined with some form of exercise.  Check with your health care professional before starting any new exercise regiments to stay safe and healthy.
