Malik, our youngest son will be returning to Bowie State University in a few short weeks to begin his Junior year.   This summer he purchased a vehicle which hubby and I helped with, so now our money is funny.  Because of this, a new laptop, which he needs was not going to be on the list of back to school college supplies.

Our son began his college career on a “conditional” basis due to low grades in high school, but he worked hard and finished his 2nd year with a 3.00 GPA.  Therefore, he is deserving of a new computer and fortunately we found one that he loves and also fit into our budget.

The HP Notebook 15-ay039wm is lightweight at only 4.73 pounds and sized right so it will be easy for him to carry it across campus to class and back to his dorm room or library.  With up to a 6 hour battery life it’s also perfect for taking notes in lecture halls, writing reports, and printing class assignments.  The DTS Studio Sound will enhance his listening experience for music, watching videos and of course playing games during his down time.

When I received the HP Notebook 15-ay03wm which is also sold new at Walmart, he was super excited and couldn’t wait to take it to his bedroom to check out all the features.

If like us, you also have a son or daughter then you know that they can set up a new computer quick, fast and in a hurry, so I just let him handle that.

getting ready to get back to college

He wanted to review the dates and times of dorm check-in so that he could decide on when it would be best to submit his 2-week notice at work.

He also needed to check the dates of the Fall football games as well as his new schedule so that he could mentally prepare for the new semester.

Whether your son or daughter will be an incoming Freshmen or a returning student, Colleges and Universities want to ensure that they are all well prepared.  Therefore, it is very important for the students and parents to check the website for important dates and activities a few weeks before the semester begins and definitely before they leave home.

The HP Notebook is empowered to do more with dependable performance.  It has the latest Intel processor with plenty of hard drive space, which means he can multitask and store a lot more on it.

The vibrant display and crisp HD screen really makes photos, videos, and web pages pop with awesome detail.  The HP Notebook 15-ay039wm has measurable quality with outstanding performance backed by over 200 tests and best of all it’s operating system is Windows 10 Home and it comes with one year of free cloud storage!

HP Notebook is perfect for blogging

Unfortunately, my current laptop is also on it’s last legs and needs to be replaced so I took advantage of Malik being at work to use it to write a few blog posts.

I really loved the high quality HD display and advanced HDD Storage.

new HP Notebook can be purchased at Walmart

The HP Notebook 15-ay03wm can be purchased at your local Walmart at a price that is right for most budgets.  You can tackle all your daily tasks with an affordable laptop that comes packed with the features you need.

University of Delaware Convocation 2016

On Friday, May 27, 2016, our son, Tayair Ishmael Blake participated in a Convocation held at the University of Delaware where he received a Certificate of Successful Completion of Career and Life Studies (CLSC).

UDel Convocation 075

He along with his fellow classmates were part of the ceremony which also included hundreds of graduating students receiving an undergraduate and graduate degree from the College of Education and Human Development.  Oh by the way, there was a gentleman who received his degree at the age of 64 which was also awesome!

Tayair and his fellow classmates

If you remember from previous posts, due to Tayair’s early medical history he is classified as Intellectually Disabled, but you also know from his recent presentation at a staff meeting at the Delaware Health and Social Services his motto “Being Disabled Does Not Mean We Are Not Able”. The events of the day is only further proof that anything can be done when you decide not to give up.

Needless to say, his father and I were super excited as was his brother and even the misspelling of his name on the certificate couldn’t put a damper on the day.

There are also more pictures on my Facebook and Instgram pages.

I could write more about the event, however, for this post I am just going to let the pictures and video speak louder than my words!

Have you “had the talk” with your college freshmen?

Malik’s bags are all packed and he is ready for his return trip back to Bowie State University to start his Sophomore year. While he was home we had a chance to talk about a lot of things including his father’s cancer treatments and how to remain safe on campus.

This summer he also worked at Amazon and was able to make and save a few dollars for those “extradentials” so it was very important that we discussed his finances.  I recently read this article by Michelle Singletary which helps parents “have the talk” with their college freshmen. college students and finances

A financial suitcase for freshmen

By Michelle Singletary, Columbian business columnist

In a week or two, thousands of young adults will be heading to college for the first time and they’ll be faced with a lot of financial choices.  I wonder how prepared they will be.  It’s not enough to hope they will be ready to handle their money. As the good book says, “faith without works is dead.” Good money managers aren’t born; they’re trained.

So, as your college freshman is packing up, there’s one piece of luggage that needs to have all the right stuff: the financial suitcase. Here’s what should be inside:

college student and money

The right debit card. Before heading off to school, make sure your child has a debit card that will work well at his or her college location. That might mean opening an account with a different bank or credit union that has ATMs on or near campus to avoid an out-of-network fee. Double-check that you can easily and quickly transfer money into the account without incurring fees. For this reason, you may also want to get an account at the same financial institution.

Mobile bank alerts. If your freshman hasn’t done this already, he or she should set up alerts connected to the debit card. Alerts can be customized to report deposits, withdrawals and bill-due dates. Cardholders can also be notified when the account balance is getting low, which in turn will help avoid overdraft charges and other fees. Just be mindful of alerts received as text messages, which may incur fees from a mobile provider.

Box of envelopes: Budgeting may not be easy at first. If you know your child is challenged in this department, try the envelope money-management system. Envelopes should be labeled the following way for the four major spending categories: eating out, clothes, entertainment and transportation. Every week, two weeks or month, depending on how your child receives income or spending money, put budgeted cash for each category into the envelopes. When the money is gone from one, there’s no more spending on that category.

Commitment to save and not just spend. Yes, even students on a tight budget should save. If your student is getting a stipend or spending money from you or a job, encourage him or her to start the habit of saving something — anything — from the funds they receive not allocated for tuition, room, board and books. Suggest a “Life Happens” fund, which is different from an emergency fund. Money in this account can be used for pizza, parties, clothes, spring-break trips, concerts, etc. But when the money is taken out, your student should have a plan to replenish it.

Here are some things that students should not take to college:

no credit cards

Credit card: I know you’ve heard that it’s important for your child to establish credit. But it’s not time for that yet. As your student gets closer to graduation and needs to build credit to get an apartment or car loan, he or she can open a credit card account. But for now, as a freshman, consider credit an unnecessary luxury. Besides, debit cards with either the MasterCard or Visa logo can be used for almost any purchase. My daughter is a junior in college and she hasn’t had a need for a credit card.

Expectation to spend excess student-loan money: Talk to your child about not accepting a student-loan refund, which is money in excess of the cost of attendance. If there is money left over, he or she may get a refund check. This is not free money. It’s a loan with interest that must be paid back.

Entitlement mentality: Leave at home the attitude of having to experience everything. Going on that spring-break trip may not be feasible, especially if your child has student loans.

As your freshman is going over the checklist of things for college, make sure his or her financial suitcase is stuffed with tools and strategies that will help to avoid any money missteps.

Chime in: Did you have “the financial talk” with your college student?

Thankful Thursday | Freshmen Orientation at UDel CLSC Program

Hello friends, I hope all is well in your world.

As you know I have two sons both who will be attending college in the fall.  Our youngest, Malik, will be attending Bowie State University, and our oldest, Tayair will be heading to the University of Delaware.  #SENDMONEY

Last week Tayair and I attended a 1-day Freshman Orientation for his CLSC Program.  The CLSC Program is a new post secondary education option in Delaware for students with with intellectual disabilities.  You see, Tayair was born 3 months premature, weighing a mere 2.8 lbs and hospitalized for 6 months in NICU to treat and repair his esophagus because he was born with Tracheoesophageal Fistula.  Years of hospitalizations and surgeries led to a partial colon interposition at the age of 5, and it was the first time he was able to eat solid foods.

Needless to say, all those years of medical procedures and medications although they kept him alive and healthy, also put a strain on his brain.  But today at the age of 22, he is a High School Graduate, Class of 2010, is working steadily and ready to pursue higher education and for that I applaud him – he is my hero!

If you follow me on Facebook or Instagram you know he had maxillofacial surgery on the 30th of June so his face is still a little swollen but that didn’t stop us from taking pictures on this great day.

Freshman Orientation at UDel

You may not be able to tell from his swollen face, but my smiling face tells it all – we were excited to be there!

Paperwork completion

There was a lot of paperwork to complete as well as a homework assignment which is due on the 25th – BACK TO SCHOOL

Parents had their own orientation session as well.

A quick break for lunch led us to the on campus Saladworks, Tayair had soup-through-a-straw!

A walking tour ended this great day, and he is looking forward to classes beginning next month.

Malik leaves for Bowie on the 27th and I also look forward to that Freshmen Orientation.

I am so thankful that our son was selected to attend the CLSC Program at the University of Delaware.  This program offers him specialized career studies and life studies coursework with access to a variety of integrated academic, work, and social activities on campus.

I believe it is going to enhance his social skills and provide him with the tools necessary to navigate the world without barriers and guide him towards a very productive lifestyle.  I am also so very thankful that his surgery was a success despite the aspiration pneumonia that followed.

I am thankful for you my followers, my family, my friends and of course my faith.  Now heading over to share at Katherine’s Corner, join in if you have a chance.

Now, it’s your turn, what are you thankful for this week?

Thankful Thursday Then & Now |Graduation 2014

On Thankful Thursday February 1st, 1996, I gave birth to a healthy son, al-Malik Glorian Blake, his first name in Arabic means “King or Monarch”.  His middle name was given in memory of my sister, his aunt Gloria whom he never met.

On Thankful Thursday May 22nd 2014, I watched that son walk across the stage at the Bob Carpenter Center on the campus of the University of Delaware to receive his High School Diploma.

I am thankful but where did the time go?

As a young boy, I helped him learn how to walk and then last week he walked out the door a High School Senior with his Cap and Gown…walked into the gymnasium with a glow of excitement and anticipation, yet filled with anxiety of an unknown future…he then walked back into the house a High School GRADUATE…soon he’ll walk again, but this time it will be off to College.

I am thankful but where did the time go?
