September Twentieth Nineteen Sixty One
I was born!!!!
Yes, today is my 52nd Birthday
I was going to post some old baby pictures of myself, but unlike me, my mother didn’t take many nor did I have any.
Yesterday a co-worker surprised me with a card, candy and this balloon so here I am pre-celebration
BTW – I didn’t make the 152 by 52 weight loss challenge…but I’m not giving up!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME – IT’S BEEN A BLESSED LIFE!
Hello Friends and Happy Hump Day Wednesday
Oftentimes I find myself spending way too much money on junk food and snacks at the grocery stores. I wonder if subconsciously it’s because my grandmother didn’t buy a lot of snacks while we were growing up. It’s funny because in her later years she always wanted candy or something sweet to eat after dinner or while watching TV. I wonder if that also stemmed from her not having sweets as a child even though her father owned a candy store in Canton, North Carolina in the early 19oo’s.
McDonald’s Apple Pie and Peanuts Candy were her favorites.
My grandmother thought snacks should be fresh or dried fruit, stalks of celery and carrot sticks that was always in a large cup of ice water on the top shelf of the refrigerator. On rare occasions there would be a jar of Pimento Spread to dip the celery sticks in.
Although, she may not have bought us a lot of junk food, candy or sweets, that didn’t mean that we didn’t find a way to get some!
My sister Gloria and I would save our coins and when we had enough money we’d run up the hill and straight to the corner store for some of these unhealthy treats:
I am now the same age that my grandmother was when she began raising us, and I finally appreciate a good piece of dried fruit or fiber stick! It’s funny how some things that we are taught in our youth doesn’t make sense until we actually experience it later in life.
When shopping I also make sure to purchase fresh fruit including apples, bananas, and oranges as well as cheese and crackers but those Oreo Cookies and Ice Cream seem to get eaten first.
What were some of your favorite snacks growing up and what snack if any do you buy now?
