Tourist in Town at Battery Park

As most of you know, I teach Basic Blogging and Social Media Savvy Workshops for The Money School of Delaware.  These workshops are usually held at the Bear Library, close to home in Middletown.

However, last week I taught a workshop at the New Castle Library in Old New Castle which is a beautiful, quaint little town about 30 minutes from my home.

The class was very interactive and I was glad that all of these “future Delaware bloggers” came out on such a beautiful day.  Because it was such a beautiful Saturday, after the workshop, Beverly Powers, an attendee, author and friend of mine decided to have lunch, stroll through the town and then take a walk through Battery Park.

We decided to have lunch at Jessop’s Tavern a small Colonial Style restaurant where I ordered a delicious salad topped with shrimp and Beverly ordered the same but with salmon.

The salads were both large enough to satisfy our hunger as well as filling enough to justify the walk down to Battery Park.

We stopped along to way to take pictures as I had never been to Old New Castle during the day and after living in Delaware for over 30 years it was fun being a tourist in my own state.

Old New Castle is a beautiful place so the next time I visit, I will ask hubby if he would care to join me.

As a matter of fact, starting in July there will be free summer concerts in Battery Park on Wednesdays, so we will definitely come back for one of them.  tourist in Old New Castle Garden at NCC ibrary tourist in Old New Castle tourist in Old New Castle

It was a bit windy once we got to Battery Park but there were a lot of people out and about either walking, having a family picnic, reading, or just relaxing on a park bench enjoying the beautiful sunshine.  We took the opportunity to take more pictures and to broadcast few Facebook Livestream videos.

As we returned to our vehicles we peeked into the windows of several stores that were closed due to the lateness of the day.

We picked up a tourist brochure which were available outside of the Mayor’s office and read about the Historic New Castle Heritage Trail with tours on Wednesday through Sunday.  These audio self-guided tours are also available online at newcastlehistory.org  shoppes in Old New Castle Battery Park 9 shoppes in Old New Castle

It was fun being a tourist in my state of Delaware and I will definitely make plans to come back when the shoppes are open.

Thankful Thursday – Savvy Social Media Workshop

Hello Friends and Happy Thankful Thursday!

Today I begin by saying, “Thank You” to The Money School of Delaware for inviting me to be part of last week’s Savvy Social Media Workshop (#SavvySocialMedia).  As you know, passion is the driving force behind blogging, it is what makes us strive to be the best bloggers we can be.  When you are recognized for doing such it is truly a blessing and for that I am thankful!

thank you money school

I work full time outside of the home but I consider blogging as my “side gig”, one that I am looking to monetize so that it becomes my “side income” one that will take me into my retirement years.  If you read Michelle Singletary’s commentary last week, the topic was “For many, side income gives peace of mind”. (Read it here)

#SaavySocialMedia Workshop

The Social Media Workshop was a perfect example of this as it was geared towards entrepreneurs, non-profits and small business owners.  The main point being how social media plays an important role in the success of a side gig which can ultimately give you peace of mind.

Amy Cherry, News Reporter and Anchor for 1150 WDEL AM spoke to the audience on how to contact and work with the media when requesting coverage for a project or event.  She also provided tips on the best ways to photograph and video these events as well as why it’s important to always be interview-ready when the contact is made.

Randi Penfil from Constant Contact used a fantastic PowerPoint presentation to emphasis the importance of a successful email marketing campaign.  Discussing the evolution of initial email writing which once was plain text to today’s glossy Newsletters and pdf files.  She also pointed out the “do’s and don’ts” of email marketing and offered to work with them in getting started.

Carl Immediato, grandson of the owner of Three Little Bakers once a staple in the state of Delaware, grew up believing that one day he too would follow in his grandfather’s footsteps.  Unfortunately when the theatre closed he needed to step out and do something differently and is now an Independent Associate with Talk Fusion.  Carl showed us how using video can make a personal statement which can better brand your business.

I was the final speaker of the day and my topic was “How To Monetize Your Blog”.  Most of us realize that money can be made blogging other than having a product or service to sell, i.e. Etsy or eBay.  A blog can be monetized with Affiliate Marketing, Banner or PPC/CPA ads,  Sponsored Posts/Reviews, Direct Advertising, Consulting, Speaking Engagements, and/or Teaching.

Adhering to the 3-P’s, the 3-C’s and ABC as I wrote in a previous post (here), being a successful blogger and making money doing so is quite possible.  It takes passion, patience, perseverance and hard work, but it is definitely doable and has provided many with “a peace of mind”.

This was yet another great event sponsored by The Money School of Delaware, a non-profit that I am proud to be associated with.

Viggle – Are You A Couch Potato – There’s An App For That!

Get Paid To Watch TV!

Viggle app Viggle is a loyalty program for people who watch television, it gives rewards for checking into the TV shows that you are watching.  Available for Android, Apple iPhone®, iPad® and iPod touch®, Viggle automatically identifies the television shows its users are watching and awards them points when they check-in.

*Viggle users can redeem their points in the app’s rewards catalog for items such as movie tickets, music, gift cards or they can convert them into charitable donations.

Viggle works by using the microphone on your device to listen in on the TV show or movie and gives you the option to share what you are watching with friends. Viggle’s basic integration is with Facebook and Twitter but telling Viggle what you’re watching is for your own personal gain.

You need to be a couch potato because the minimum amount of points needed to redeem a reward is 7,500, or approximately 60 hours of tv-watching. You can also get bonus points by tagging live TV shows, special events, or watching ads within the app.

*Check  out this free app and take note to any changes that may have occurred since this post first appeared.
