Retire or Regroup | Encore Entrepreneur
Hello Friends and Happy Tax Day Tuesday!
If you’re anything like me no matter what year in your career you’re in, the countdown to retirement has begun. I never told hubby, but when he signed his retirement papers on the 28th of February I was extremely jealous! It’s not that I’m ready to sit home and do nothing or pack my bags and start traveling, I am just looking forward to the day when I have the option to work or NOT!
At this point in my life I am too young and active to retire or at least retire without a plan, which is why this blog is part of a bigger 5-year plan. I’ve thought about starting a small business, but it would have to one of little to no stress and definitely little to NO commuting involved!
Ideally, I would love to sit on the dock of a bay with a laptop or tablet writing and creating. Perhaps I’ll have a little shack where tourist can purchase fishing bait and tackle!
There was an article published in USA Today that caught my attention, it stated that “more older entrepreneurs are starting businesses after they’ve worked and retired from other careers”. They have been labeled “encore entrepreneurs”. An encore entrepreneur is someone over the age of 50 who starts a small business or begins a new career. Some of these small businesses are non-profits that provide a social need such as job training for the unemployed. Others turn their hobby or passion into an income stream which is part of my 5-year plan.
Of course as with any new start-up there are obstacles and challenges, but with age comes wisdom and knowledge both of which are a plus for the encore entrepreneur. Job layoffs, supplementing or replacing income are just a few reasons for starting a business after the age of 50.
However, with people living longer becoming an encore entrepreneur gives us an opportunity to stay active and do something that perhaps we’ve always wanted to do.
What about you, are you ready to retire or regroup and become an encore entrepreneur?
I cannot see you having a bait shop 😉 But I am an encore entrepreneur and it’s hard work sometimes but the commute is way better.
Really…can’t you see me now…just sitting by the dock handing out rods and reels…lol
You gotta touch the bait too! lol
Not a problem as I learned how to handle worms from an early age…now removing a fish from a hook – that’s a whole different ball of wax – no can do!
That’s easy unless it’s a catfish then that can get dodgy.
Yuck…no way am I touching a catfish!
As long as you have the start-up capital, go for it my Sista. I often think I shoulda-woulda-coulda but now I just want to travel and enjoy my life as much as possible. Please let me know where I can buy bait and have a good conversation when the fish are not biting!!
Gurl, we would have a blast sitting by the dock of the bay…just now sure how many fish we would catch!
Really cool and hats off to everybody pursuing a new career after 50. My dad started his company two years ago (and he’s 63):)
Good for him! The longer we live the more opportunities we have to pursue additional careers.
Honestly, if money was no object I would choose to live like a nomad. Get an RV and just drive from place to place with the family spending as little or as much time as we wanted in any one place. I love feeling free and I love variety. I want to see everything.
That being said I am sure I would write- finish the many stories I started but never finished and i’d volunteer.
You and me both…can you imagine just driving cross country with no schedule enjoying the beautiful and magnificent sites we have in this country.
Hello, yes I am retired and ready to embark on something greater than what I’m doing now. I’ve attended a class in regards to selling on ebay. I’m looking forward to the process. I will let you know how things turn out.
That sounds wonderful, yes, please let me know as I would love to visit your eBay shop!
I’ve become what we call in France an ‘autoentrepreneur’, not because I’m near retiring but because of neccessity (looking after my baby son at home and the difficult job market here at home). It’s tough but I like the challenge.
Good for you, sometimes obstacles turn into opportunities – much success and blessings!
Thank you! 🙂
I’m not ready to retire, but I am on a second career. My husband will retire in a bout 3 years, so we’ll see. I plan to keep doing my business ventures and see where they take me.
Yes, doing what makes you happy regardless is all that matters. Good luck to both you and hubby and all your future endeavors.
