Hello friends, I hope all is well in your world.

Sometimes I used to wish that there was a manual with chapters that could answer questions about raising my sons, questions like when was it a good time to teach them the basics.  When do we teach them how to cook and clean or manage a household? When do we teach them how to write a check or pay a bill?  Do we teach our daughters differently than our sons?

So many questions ran through my mind and now with them starting college in a few weeks, and the youngest leaving home for the first time, a strange question popped into my head, does my son know how to peel a potato?

When did you teach your sons how to sew?

Does your son know how to sew?

When did you teach your sons how to wash their clothes, fold and then put them away?

I don’t know when I didn’t start the lessons lol I think I been teaching my lil mama how to fend for herself since she was a toddler! I know maybe way to young but hey thats what I remember 🙂 Great share!!

  • The memories of what we teach our sons! I can so relate to this article. Luckily, I did teach my sons these things as some of these were chores for them. They may not do these things all the time, but at least you know you have taught them these important skills. I remember my youngest son calling me one evening, “Hi Mom! How do I bake a potato?” We still chuckle at this one!

That is so cute and I know what you mean because once they leave home and are own their own there are probably a million things they wished we would have taught them or they should have watched us do. But in my book, as long as they can pick up the phone and dial ‘mom”, everything is A OK!

  • Awesome share! I think way too many times parents don’t concentrate on teaching little boys these things. I have a son and daughter about a year apart and they learn the same thing at the same time from mommy and daddy. They both need to learn how to be independent. Right now, they are 4 and 3 and they are leaning to put dirty clothes in the laundry, pick up their toys and put them appropriate places and help set the table. As they get older, we will add to those responsibilities.

Ayana, you and hubby are a wonderful mommy and daddy as you would be surprised at how many parents don’t start their kids off young. Unfortunately, this not only affects them as they get older, it also affects the parents because then the kids don’t want to or even know how to help around the house. Teach em young..teach em good! Have a terrific Tuesday.

  • Such a Great post. I taught my son all those things ’cause he was an only child and I needed the help! You did so good my Sista.

  • I am truly impressed! I can’t remember any of this as far as when I taught my kids how to do these things.

Thank you, which is exactly what I was trying to do – remember when I taught them. I do however, remember them doing small chores when they were young and washing clothes starting around the age of 10

  • First of all I have to say I love your home decor. It’s so warm, cozy and beautifully decorated. I am so impressed that your sons can do all these things by themselves. You truly raised them well. I wouldn’t know the answers to all your questions since I don’t have boys or brothers. But as far as my daughter is concerned, she’s my shadow and she always helps me clean, cook, fold clothes, put it away and do laundry (of course in her own way)

Yes, it’s great that you have a mini me who likes to help out around the house. that is the best way for her to learn. It was so funny because I don’t remember teaching my sons how to peel a potato, yet I was worried that they didn’t know. I also remember the first time they learned how to fold clothes, so cute.

  • This was a great post and a wonderful teaching too for young parents. Great job!

  • you taught all of the things ( and more) needed. Love this post my friend. I can remember when I taught our two oldest granddaughters how to use a potato peeler. But I can’t remember when I taught my daughter ( she’s 34) xo

  • I really loved this post! Some of it I am sure you showed them, but a lot of it was probably watching you and your husband. You set great examples! I know you are a proud mama. xoxo

Thank you sweetie but if you read the text messages from Malik this week at Bowie you would have sworn I didn’t teach him a thing – wait until you read the post “Texts from A Teenage College Student”

I love reading your comments!
