Soulful Shopping Sunday

The 2012 holiday shopping weekend began with “Gray Thursday” next it was “Black Friday” on to “Small Business Saturday” and finally there was what I called, “Soulful Shopping Sunday”.   The Home Based Business Chamber of Commerce (DelMarVa Chapter) held its 2nd Annual Holiday Extravaganza at the Executive Banquet Center in Newark, DE. Outside the Banquet Center the morning air was chilly with a slight hint of mid-day snow but inside the sun streamed through glass doors creating a silhouetted pathway into a large conference room.  Inside that room were brightly covered tables of 43 vendors who were busily adding the final touches to their “stores”.  Delaware and it’s neighboring sister states have an abundance of Home Based Business entrepreneurs and this was a perfect venue for showcasing and networking.

The event began with an Opening Ceremony consisting of award presentations and recognition of members including the first and only member of the Junior Home Based Business Chamber of Commerce.  Justine D’Artist, a 12 year old young lady who creates Duct Tape accessories, roses, wallets and bags.  Each vendor was then handed the microphone to give a brief introduction of themselves and their businesses. By noon people began to trickle in and were presented with a Gift Bag and a “Visit The Vendor” form which if returned and signed by all the vendors would become a raffle ticket, eligible for a cash prize. Several of the vendors provided door prizes which were awarded throughout the day. The $5 admission fee included free Hors D’oeuvres, coloring and face painting for the kids, a live performance by Best Kept Soul, which is a local band who had people out on the dance floor.  There was also performances by Praise Dancers and the Holy Soldiers and His Embrace.

As I walked around stopping to talk to several vendors, I noted that regardless of their product or service they all had one thing in common – true passion and sheer determination. Entrepreneurs and small business owners are America’s life blood which keeps the economy strong and resilient and for that they should be commended.

Jaimie and Ira, Prez and VP of the HBB Chamber of Commerce are doing an excellent job in exposing and expanding the DelMarVa Chapter.  They have made it the fastest growing chapter and recently received the “Chamber of the Year” Award.   Currently there are 7 National Chapters and DelMarVa includes Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey, and DC.  As a non-profit their funding is received from sponsorship’s, events such as this and membership dues. If you are a Home Based Business owner and are interested in becoming a member, please contact Jaimie Shanklin at 302-784-5311.

This was by far the best stress-free shopping event of the weekend – shopping, eating, drinking and dancing – you can’t beat that with a stick!

Holiday Open House

On Saturday, The Home Based Business Chamber of Commerce hosted a Holiday Open House at The Java House Cafe in Middletown, DE.  In attendance were small business owners representing Gold Canyon Candles; Mary Kay; MICHE Bags; Jacfred Creation; Logan Insurance; touchpro; Girl Friday; Duct Tape Accessories; Slumber Parties and Send Out Cards.  The Java House Cafe provided mini Jerk Chicken, Veggie and Turkey Panini sandwiches as customers shopped and mingled.

Delaware’s state slogan “A Small Wonder“, was fitting for this event as it was a small gathering, however, I see the potential for rapid increased growth due to the hard work and diligence of President, Jaimie Shanklin.  The Chamber’s 2nd Annual Holiday Extravaganza is being held Sunday, November 25th, at the Executive Banquet Center in Newark, DE.  Holiday shopping and a live performance by Best Kept Soul is sure to bring out more people from throughout the state.

Stop The Self-Sabotaging

What can a little black girl with low self esteem, who grew up in a rough neighborhood in Baton Rouge, filled with drugs, prostitution, gang violence and other unhealthy habits teach me about self-sabotaging behaviors?

I attended a seminar sponsored by the Home Based Business Chamber of Commerce, (DelMarVa Chapter) held at the Java House Café in Middletown. Initially I signed up for the event in support of small businesses in Middletown not really knowing what to expect. There I met and listened to LaShawanda Moore of Elevate Success, a Professional Business Coach, who holds an undergraduate degree in Engineering from Southern U; a Masters in Business; a wife; a mother of 4, one of which is only 7 weeks; a full time employee of the DuPont Company and a Lia Sophia consultant. She IS that little black girl from Baton Rouge and she taught me a lot!  By the way, this is how LaShawanda introduced herself, I was not criticizing her.

Her journey was long as it was for most of us in attendance including retirees on their 2nd career, full time employees of companies, a physical therapist, a stay-at-home mom, a landscaper, and a writer. All working hard every day in addition to operating home based businesses selling jewelry, candles, crafts, cosmetics, residential cleaning services, and a self published book of poetry.

Finding Your Deserve Level, Exceeding Self Imposed Limitations, Creating Self Confidence and Self Esteem, Turning Negatives into Positives and Stop The Self Sabotaging Beliefs, concepts all based upon the book “Stop Self-Sabotage” by Pat Pearson, M.S.S.W. The seminar was very interactive; LaShawanda controlled the time covering 10 pages of exercises accompanied by a Power Point Presentation. Time allowed for open-ended questions, mini exercises, and food-for-thought “homework” assignments. Mark, the owner of The Java House Café provided his famous Panini sandwiches so that our minds and bodies could be fed at the same time. The seminar was scheduled for 2 hours but we exceeded that due to the discussions and networking that followed the program.

The presentation ended with two drawings, one a Scholarship, ($299 value) to attend the C.O.R.E. Connect 1-Day Training next month at The Christiana Hilton. Surprisingly, I won and am looking forward to attending which is designed to teach direct sales reps the basics of the business in a unique manner.

Thank you Jaime and Ira Spencer, of the Home Based Business Chamber of Commerce, networking events such as these truly help businesses grow and it does “Bring Home Based Businesses Out Of The Closet”.
