Black Eye Peas & Collard Greens ~ New Year’s Eve Tradition

Hello Friends and Happy (soggy) Sunday

Sitting here at the kitchen table, cutting out coupons and watching the rain fall I decided to fire up the iPad and read my emails (multi-tasking to the max).  After reading a new comment from Kirsten Womack I decided to repost the Kale and Black Eye Pea Soup recipe as a twist on my traditional New Year’s Eve dinner.

black eye peas The cooking and eating of Black Eye Peas and Collard Greens is a New Year’s Day tradition deeply rooted in the African American culture.  I have for many years always had a big pot of Black Eye Peas and Collard Greens simmering on the stove top while chicken wings were being deep fried on the side.  It’s tradition to eat a little of each immediately after kneeling in prayer on New Years Eve for good luck and prosperity heading forward.

This year will be no exception, however, I may use the Crock Pot to cook them both together not only for the added luck but because it will make for an easier clean up.

We also send one of our sons outside with money in his pocket and then have him be the first to walk through the front door.  This is not an African American tradition it’s just something fun to do!

What are your New Year’s Eve Traditions?

REPOST from 12/13/13

Today’s Friday Foodie Feature is Kale & Black Eye Pea Soup

Sunday I purchased a container of CutnClean Kale from Safeway to be used in my salads for the week.  However, after hearing the weather forecast for more snow I decided to use it to make a Crock Pot soup with Black Eye Peas.

Snowy Days 007

In the winter, my grandmother used to make the best homemade vegetable soups using ingredients she already had in the refrigerator, freezer or pantry.  So in keeping with tradition I used some leftover celery stalks, an onion, garlic, carrots and Bouillon cubes to make this soup.

Ingredients:

  • Dry Black Eye Peas – 1/2 bag
  • Kale – 1/2 package
  • Celery – diced
  • Carrots – diced
  • Onion – diced
  • Garlic – diced
  • Bouillon Cubes (2)
  • Water
  • Olive Oil
  • Black Pepper
  • Smoked Turkey Necks (optional)

Mama Midget (yes that was her name), never used measuring cups or spoons so neither do I especially when using the Crock Pot.  I just throw in what I have or think is enough.

Snowy Days 011

Rinse and drain 1/2 bag of dry Black Eye peas

Add 2 Bouillon Cubes to 3 cups of hot water

Pour Olive Oil into Crock Pot just enough to cover bottom

Snowy Days 013

Chop onion, garlic, carrots and celery and add to Crock Pot

Snowy Days 014

Snowy Days 015

Add Kale and sprinkle with Black Pepper

Snowy Days 016

Pour in Bouillon Stock, adding more water to cover all ingredients if necessary

Snowy Days 017

Stir and if desired add Smoked Turkey Legs or Necks

Snowy Days 018

Cover and cook on low 8 hour, high 4 hours – depending on Crock Pot model.  Don’t forget to make some Skillet Corn Bread!

Dress for Less on NYE

Hello Friends and Happy Kwanzaa!

I trust you all had an enjoyable and peaceful Christmas and that you received everything you wanted.

Today is the first day of Kwanzaa and the first principle is Umoja or “Unity”.  As you go about your day I ask that you spread a little kindness with a smile or a simple “how do you do”.  This can make someone’s day brighter because we are all in this crazy mixed-up world together!

The last day of Kwanzaa is January 1st and if you have plans of going out for New Year’s Eve you’re probably in need of a new outfit.

As a stylist with the Goodwill 2014 Runway Show I’ve had the opportunity to pull together outfits for the various models. I’ve also pulled some dresses for the show that I think would be great for a New Year’s Eve event.

All of these dresses were under $20.00, most were only $5.00, so if you broke the bank at Christmas you can definitely save money for New Years.

Whether you’ll be dancing and prancing or just sitting and staring at others on the dance floor, you’ll look good doing it in a new dress or gown from Goodwill. Accessories such as new shoes, scarves, jewelry and handbags can also be found at your local Goodwill.

As you can see, several of these dresses and shoes are new with the tags still attached.  There are definitely bargains to be found at Goodwill and you’ll be giving back and helping others in your community not only with your purchases but with your donations as well.

So what do you think, will it be a “Breakfast At Tiffany’s” or “Sex in the City” type of night?

Have a wonderful time and be safe!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Daily Deal Superstore

Hello Friends, I hope your day is going well!

You know me, DeDivahDeals, always looking for a bargain, well I came across what I think is the best way to find and buy daily deals.  In the past, I have bought deals from Groupon and Living Social but the constant emails for deals that I wasn’t interested in was annoying.  Thankfully, this is not the case with www.dailydealsuperstore.com.

www.dailydealsuperstore.com has all the deals in one place – from the recognizable, big names to the really local deal companies, and everything in between.  I have created my own profile so I only get the deals from Wilmington, and the surrounding areas and Philadelphia, PA and I don’t have to read through a bunch of others.   I can change my profile any time, so when I plan a trip I can add my destination and pick out a few cool deals before I leave.

www.dailydealsuperstore.com gives me a lot of categories to choose from so it’s really easy to either see the deals I want and hide the ones that I’m not interested in. Beauty deals not your thing? No problem, deselect the box and those deals won’t show up in your personalized list.

www.dailydealsuperstore.com has a great Facebook app too, so I can share deals with my Facebook friends – and earn rewards!   We all could earn points from every deal and redeem them for gift cards.  Saving money on deals AND earning rewards – winning!

Anywho, click on the banner below to register and start getting some great deals today – try it, I think you’ll like it!

OOTD – Tuesday’s Two Thrifted Tops & $5

Hello Friends, I hope you are having a terrific Tuesday.

It appears as though everyone is back to work because the commute was slow and I drove even slower trying to save gas. Can you believe the prices, I last paid $3.65 for a gallon and it’s goes up a few cents every day.  How much is it in your area?

My commute is 100 miles round trip and it is definitely putting a dent in my wallet, so to save money I have vowed not to shop until April when the prices are supposed to drop. The economic recovery is no where near where it should be and these gas prices aren’t helping!  Before my self imposed shopping freeze I was able to snag two skirts from JC Penney’s for $5 each and am wearing one of them with a thrifted top and blazer.

OOTD – Sunday Shopping

Hello friends and Happy Sunday I hope you had a wonderful weekend and are anxiously looking forward to next week. This year we are not having a big Thanksgiving dinner because my son has to work and my mother-in- law is hospitalized battling intestinal cancer.
I ask that you keep her in your thoughts and prayers during this time, thank you.

Although we are not having a big Thanksgiving dinner I still needed to grocery shop and today it wasn’t a chore. I did however, feel sorry for some running around quickly filling their carts like crazy spending way too much!
My casual attire along with my casual attitude allowed me to better compare prices, use a lot of coupons and save a little money.

Flea Market Saturday

On the 1st Saturday of each month from April to November you can rent 3 parking spaces at Dutch Country Farmers Market for $15 to sell new and used items. You get a lot more traffic at the Farmers Market than you would in having an individual yard sale at home. My husband thinks I am a hoarder because I keep a lot of unused items in the house, which is true but I am definitely not like those as seen on tv or like some of the other vendors. I like buying at flea markets but LOVE making extra money selling at flea markets and for a few hours that is exactly what I did.

Despite the intense rains on Friday night, Saturday morning turned out to be a perfect day to buy and sell at Farmers Market – can’t wait until next month!

Yes, I keep and sold old electronics!
