Happy Giving Tuesday!
Thanksgiving weekend has taken on a new tradition in our home. As the years have passed and our sons have got older rushing out on Black Friday to buy the latest toy or gadget has been replaced by staying indoors relaxing and spending time together watching movies. This year Shop Small Saturday and Cyber Monday were also days in which we kept money in our wallets instead choosing to clear out closets gathering gently used clothing to be donated to the Salvation Army which will be picked up on Wednesday.
Donating to Toys for Tots where a local RE/MAX Realtor sets up a drop box at the entrance of over 20 local developments and donating cans and non-perishable foods to the Delaware Food Bank is yet another holiday tradition.
Giving Tuesday is a globally celebrated day of giving back that kicks off the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and continues until the end of the year.
Giving back can be done in many different ways from donating cash or checks to charitable organization which has been vetted to giving time at a local soup kitchen, homeless shelter or delivering Meals on Wheels. Giving as a family can create a positive tradition that can be passed on to the future generations, fostering a sense of caring and responsibility.
There are so many local organizations that could use your support, if you don’t know of any personally there are several websites that will assist you in locating several of them; GuideStar, Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving site.
If you live in Delaware, here is a partial list of non-profit organizations that would love to accept donations in celebration of #GivingTuesday
-
Soul Saving Family Restoration Center, Inc.
-
Students for Haiti
-
Freedom Center For Independent Living
-
Christ Servants Mission Institute
-
Delaware Center for Homeless Veterans, Inc.
As you know, many of your donations are tax-deductible so keep a record of the amounts or items, as well as the dates and organizations for annual tax return filing.
Is #GivingTuesday part of your holiday traditions?

Hello friends and Happy Black Friday. I trust you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving, a day filled with with plenty of food surrounded by family, friends and fun.
However, if like us, you had more food than family and friends and are now looking at a lot of leftover turkey, here’s a change to the classic turkey sandwich. This healthy recipe can be found online at Health.com.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
- 1 1/2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/8 teaspoon hot chili powder (optional)
- 1/8 teaspoon minced garlic
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro
- 1 tablespoon fat-free sour cream
- 2 cups (about 12 ounces) cooked, coarsely chopped turkey breast
- 8 (6-inch) flour tortillas
- 1 cup drained and rinsed canned black beans
- 1/2 cup bottled salsa
- 1 cup shredded iceberg lettuce
- 1/2 cup pre-shredded reduced-fat 4-cheese Mexican blend cheese
- 1/2 cup diced peeled avocado
Preparation
1. Using a whisk, mix first 7 ingredients (through sour cream) in a small bowl. Toss with turkey. Set aside.
2. Heat the tortillas according to package directions.
3. Spoon 1/4 cup of the turkey mixture onto each tortilla. Then top each tortilla with 2 tablespoons drained and rinsed black beans, 1 tablespoon bottled salsa, 2 tablespoons shredded iceberg lettuce, 1 tablespoon shredded cheese, and 1 tablespoon diced peeled avocado.
4. Fold tortilla around taco mixture and serve.
I made this for my men and they loved it, it was a great treat to eat while watching football, and to save on my calories, I just added some of the turkey mixture to a salad.
So what are some other ways in which you use leftover turkey?

Hello Friends and Happy Hump Day Wednesday
I trust you all had a safe and enjoyable long Thanksgiving weekend with an opportunity to do something special. Everyday I am thankful for the little things that God blesses me with and even more so when I can share those blessings with others.
On Friday fellow thriftanista and BLMGirl, Whitney Nic James embarked on a Thrift with Nic Weekend Tour (#twntour) sponsored by Kia Motors and her first stop was in Delaware. I honestly had no plans of going out or even getting dressed but when she texted I knew I couldn’t let her visit my state without seeing her. It wasn’t just because we are fellow bloggers but because I’ve adopted her as my “lil sis”, and you know that I lost my real ‘lil sis in a car accident in 1992.
I quickly dressed and drove to meet her at the Goodwill Outlet in New Castle. The outlet wasn’t originally on her agenda but one of the consignment shops that she chose was closed and thankfully the outlet was closer to me.
I had never been to a Goodwill Outlet and from the looks of things it was obvious that it’s the “early birds that get all the worms”. Somewhat disappointed but not defeated, I suggested we head further south down to Smyrna, to one of my favorite Goodwill locations. Her husband, Darrius was the driver and also a native Delawarean, however, he had never been to the Smyrna store and was eager to go.
Whitney and her new hubby Darrius are a thrifting duo!
Can’t leave a Delaware Goodwill without buying a
“I Love Thrifting” t-shirt!
It was the day before Goodwill’s 50% off Saturday Sale but there were a few items that I just couldn’t pass up.
If you read my profile you know that I am a big supporter of Goodwill, not just because I love to thrift but because it was the last place my sister worked before her untimely death. She is the first thought that comes to mind when I enter a Goodwill but on this trip she was more than just a passing thought.
My sister had a best friend named Darlene, they were inseparable until she left to join the United States Air Force, and it was during that time they became separated forever. Darlene was in Boot Camp when Gloria was killed in a car accident and unfortunately wasn’t able to attend the funeral. Darlene and I spoke briefly afterwards but never saw each other again … not until Friday and at all places… Goodwill.
Between the hugs and tears, I discovered that she now lives in Smyrna and works in Middletown, and is also newly married. How amazing was it that thanks to my adopted ‘lil sis, I was reunited with my real ‘lil sis’ best friend at a Goodwill! #blessed
What started out as a Black Friday turned into a Blessed Friday!
I am linking up with Whitney’s Personal Style Wednesday so come on over and meet some other thrifting fashionistas.

Hello Friends and Happy Fri-Yay!
Today is “Black Friday”, and in the United States it’s the day after Thanksgiving, noted as the first day of Christmas shopping. Crowds of consumers are drawn to special offers by retailers and some people even lose their minds!
Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on your point of view this year some retailers began their Black Friday sales Thursday night!
Die hard Black Friday shoppers are those who after Thanksgiving dinner will leave the warmth of their homes and drive to stores to camp out overnight for the latest, lowest priced gadget.
Are you a Black Friday Shopper? If so, more power to ya just don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes, carry snacks and a bottle of water in a small purse and check out this 2013 Black Friday Shopping Guide.
Have Fun and Be Safe!
I don’t like shopping in the holiday madness and prefer to stay local which is why I like places like the Dutch Country Farmers Market in Middletown. My sons are older so there’s no need to wait until Christmas to buy them gifts, those days of hunting for Tickle Me Elmo, Furby or Star Wars memorabilia is long behind me. I can now enjoy leisurely shopping and watch others stress – lol!
Here’s a look inside our local Farmers’s Market
Tomorrow is Shop Small Business Saturday so come back to see which Middletown Shops I’ve featured.

The 2012 holiday shopping weekend began with “Gray Thursday” next it was “Black Friday” on to “Small Business Saturday” and finally there was what I called, “Soulful Shopping Sunday”. The Home Based Business Chamber of Commerce (DelMarVa Chapter) held its 2nd Annual Holiday Extravaganza at the Executive Banquet Center in Newark, DE. Outside the Banquet Center the morning air was chilly with a slight hint of mid-day snow but inside the sun streamed through glass doors creating a silhouetted pathway into a large conference room. Inside that room were brightly covered tables of 43 vendors who were busily adding the final touches to their “stores”. Delaware and it’s neighboring sister states have an abundance of Home Based Business entrepreneurs and this was a perfect venue for showcasing and networking.
The event began with an Opening Ceremony consisting of award presentations and recognition of members including the first and only member of the Junior Home Based Business Chamber of Commerce. Justine D’Artist, a 12 year old young lady who creates Duct Tape accessories, roses, wallets and bags. Each vendor was then handed the microphone to give a brief introduction of themselves and their businesses. By noon people began to trickle in and were presented with a Gift Bag and a “Visit The Vendor” form which if returned and signed by all the vendors would become a raffle ticket, eligible for a cash prize. Several of the vendors provided door prizes which were awarded throughout the day. The $5 admission fee included free Hors D’oeuvres, coloring and face painting for the kids, a live performance by Best Kept Soul, which is a local band who had people out on the dance floor. There was also performances by Praise Dancers and the Holy Soldiers and His Embrace.
As I walked around stopping to talk to several vendors, I noted that regardless of their product or service they all had one thing in common – true passion and sheer determination. Entrepreneurs and small business owners are America’s life blood which keeps the economy strong and resilient and for that they should be commended.
Jaimie and Ira, Prez and VP of the HBB Chamber of Commerce are doing an excellent job in exposing and expanding the DelMarVa Chapter. They have made it the fastest growing chapter and recently received the “Chamber of the Year” Award. Currently there are 7 National Chapters and DelMarVa includes Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey, and DC. As a non-profit their funding is received from sponsorship’s, events such as this and membership dues. If you are a Home Based Business owner and are interested in becoming a member, please contact Jaimie Shanklin at 302-784-5311.
This was by far the best stress-free shopping event of the weekend – shopping, eating, drinking and dancing – you can’t beat that with a stick!

Hello Friends and Happy Cyber Monday, are you shopping online today? There are a few items that I’d like to get but nothing major so I think I’ll wait until this evening or perhaps even after the holidays for deeper discounts. On Black Friday I didn’t go to the mall instead I went to GW Boutique (Goodwill) in Middletown, it wasn’t crowded so I was able to take my time to find a few items knowing that I would return Saturday for the 50% off sale.
Oxblood Skirt
Jonathan Martin Polka Dot Skirt
Dressbarn 3/4 sleeve blouse
Mix It Blouse
Style & Co. Polka Dot Knit Top
Apt. 9 Brown and White Polka Dot Shirt Sleeve Blouse
In Vain Polka Dot Short Sleeve Blouse
Jones New York Polka Dot Maxi Skirt
Worthington mini dot skirt
All items were $3.75 each, I would have waited until Saturday but didn’t want the hassle of relocating them and I am not one who “hides” merchandise- lol
WantedShoes.com Leather Studded Pumps – $4.00
Givenchy Parfume Quilted tote – $2.00
Perfect size for carrying my iPad, note pad, wallet and cell phone
Holiday heels unfortunately were not my size

Hello friends and Happy Fri-Yay, Black Friday! I hope you all had a good day and if you were out shopping for deals you found some great ones! I started my day early but didn’t get out of the house until almost noon. I went to Goodwill for a little thrifting and tomorrow all clothing is 50% off so I’ll definitely be going back. This evening I attended a Home Purse Party with a friend and purchased a nice designer inspired Michael Kors bag.
I wore my black jeans and jacket today for Black Friday but changed my top, boots and bag for the Purse Party.
Have a wonderful night – Smooches!
