Weekend Wind-Down Party #28 – Hello August

Hello friends, I hope all is well in your world.

So long summer…can you believe today is the first Friday in August…time sure is flying by way too fast. I was actually behind several school buses yesterday morning, the kids didn’t look too happy but I bet their parents were!!! As you know, we have two sons heading off to college with Malik staying on campus, and there are a few items that I need to get for his dorm room. Bowie sent a brochure from Campus Market to help parents order the necessary bed and bath items that they may need. I drive past a Christmas Tree Shop, Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, Burlington Coat Factory and Ross everyday.  If I can’t purchase what he needs from one of these stores it won’t get got, because we don’t pay a sales tax in Delaware. Freshman Orientation @ Bowie State University | Thankful Thursday

Sell Bookbyte Textbooks
Hello friends, I hope all is well in your world.

It’s time to say goodbye to July and speaking of saying goodbye, on Sunday, July 27th, we took our youngest son to Bowie State University in Maryland for his 3-day Freshman Orientation. I would be lying if I said that I didn’t miss him because I did, after all it was his first time yes, his first time away from home alone for this length of time.

Bowie State is only a 2 hour drive, the traffic wasn’t bad and he slept the entire time reminding me of his younger days when he rode in the back strapped into a car seat.

Arriving on campus around 12:30, our first impression was positive, well at least the landscaping was nice, however that quickly changed because registration was held in the old gym which definitely needed renovations. Walking “the yard” we also saw several buildings that had seen better days with considerable wear and tear including inside the dorms.

However, we were impressed with other buildings including the Library and Student Center and was informed by a student that there was a much better gymnasium which we hadn’t seen.  Bowie State is an HBCU with a legacy dating back 125 years, so there is a lot of history all over this campus.

We checked in before Malik’s roommate so he had an opportunity to choose which side of the room he wanted then the disinfecting began. He didn’t seem disappointed in the size of the room nor the furniture which was good considering he’s never had to share one.

After completing the dorm room checklist we left to explore more of the campus.  Me of course kept stopping to take pictures, while hubby and son walked on ahead of me, not interested in what I was doing but deeply engrossed in their conversation.

Orientation began at 2:30 for both the parents and students, with parents sitting in the balcony of the new Fine and Performing Arts Center and the students in the lower level. Several speakers including the Provost spoke about BSU, it’s history and the importance of having a positive experience over the next several days. Reminding us parents that we must allow our sons and daughters to go through metamorphosis so they will be able to break through the cocoon and fly upward.

Parents were then escorted to another location for our orientation to discuss the Wellness Program, Public Safety and last but certainly not least Financial Aid. After that we were reunited with our sons and daughters for a final hug/kiss/pic goodbye as we were told leave by 6:00.

As you can see from the following pictures, there were some tender moments between father and son and I was even able to wrangle a few pictures with him as well (check out the arm grip).

We returned yesterday evening to pick him up and needless to say, he was glad to be back home to his bed, his car, his friends, and hopefully his family!

Today I am thankful to have him home for another month because the next time he leaves on August 27th, it will be for 3+ months.

Hello friends, I hope all is well in your world.

Yesterday hubby and I dropped Malik off at Bowie State University for a 3-day Freshmen Orientation, needless to say, I am now feeling a little blue.  #seperationanxiety

Moms with little ones, please be patient and enjoy these crazy toddler times because soon and very soon, they too will be leaving the nest all too soon.

A few weeks ago hubby and I were supposed to attend a wedding, however, at the last minute I decided not to go…another moody blue day but this is what I was going to wear.

This was a thrifted (new) Phillip Lim for Target dress from Goodwill.

These gorgeous sandals were purchased from Payless and went perfectly with the dress, I would have looked ‘fly’ right?

This beaded evening purse has been in my closet since forever, as a matter of fact I took it to my High School prom!!

Finding this button in the purse reminding me that I started college in 1979 brought on more tears.  Wow, my youngest is starting college in 2014, and me it was 35 years ago – my how time flies!

Okay, I am going to stop being depressed that my “baby bird” has left the nest, instead I will be glad and thankful to know that he is growing into manhood and pray that God watches over him.

Ice Cream Floating into the Weekend Wind-Down Party

Hello friends, Happy Fri-Yay and welcome to the Weekend Wind-Down Party #26

This has been such a wonderful week and I can’t believe that some of you may be gearing up for “BACK TO SCHOOL” – I know the sales and television commercials are in full swing.

Next Saturday we may drive over the bridge to Jersey to do some shopping at Cowtown Flea Market  Just to pick up a few things before Malik leaves for his 3-day Freshman Orientation at Bowie State University.

Tayair has returned to work at the UDairyCreamery but is still on a liquid diet so I made him an ice cream float to break up the monotony of pureed foods and soups.

It was easy to make with just these few ingredients, International Delight Iced Coffee, Ice Cream, Reddi Wip Cream and sprinkles.

Thankful Thursday | Freshmen Orientation at UDel CLSC Program

Hello friends, I hope all is well in your world.

As you know I have two sons both who will be attending college in the fall.  Our youngest, Malik, will be attending Bowie State University, and our oldest, Tayair will be heading to the University of Delaware.  #SENDMONEY

Last week Tayair and I attended a 1-day Freshman Orientation for his CLSC Program.  The CLSC Program is a new post secondary education option in Delaware for students with with intellectual disabilities.  You see, Tayair was born 3 months premature, weighing a mere 2.8 lbs and hospitalized for 6 months in NICU to treat and repair his esophagus because he was born with Tracheoesophageal Fistula.  Years of hospitalizations and surgeries led to a partial colon interposition at the age of 5, and it was the first time he was able to eat solid foods.

Needless to say, all those years of medical procedures and medications although they kept him alive and healthy, also put a strain on his brain.  But today at the age of 22, he is a High School Graduate, Class of 2010, is working steadily and ready to pursue higher education and for that I applaud him – he is my hero!

If you follow me on Facebook or Instagram you know he had maxillofacial surgery on the 30th of June so his face is still a little swollen but that didn’t stop us from taking pictures on this great day.

Freshman Orientation at UDel

You may not be able to tell from his swollen face, but my smiling face tells it all – we were excited to be there!

Paperwork completion

There was a lot of paperwork to complete as well as a homework assignment which is due on the 25th – BACK TO SCHOOL

parent's orientation

Parents had their own orientation session as well.

out to lunch on campus of UDel

A quick break for lunch led us to the on campus Saladworks, Tayair had soup-through-a-straw!

Freshman Orientation tour

A walking tour ended this great day, and he is looking forward to classes beginning next month.

walking the campus at UDel

Malik leaves for Bowie on the 27th and I also look forward to that Freshmen Orientation.

Freshman Orientation at UDel

I am so thankful that our son was selected to attend the CLSC Program at the University of Delaware.  This program offers him specialized career studies and life studies coursework with access to a variety of integrated academic, work, and social activities on campus.

I believe it is going to enhance his social skills and provide him with the tools necessary to navigate the world without barriers and guide him towards a very productive lifestyle.  I am also so very thankful that his surgery was a success despite the aspiration pneumonia that followed.

I am thankful for you my followers, my family, my friends and of course my faith.  Now heading over to share at Katherine’s Corner, join in if you have a chance.

Now, it’s your turn, what are you thankful for this week?
