Retire Don’t Rot ~ 10 Tips to Take a Stand Against Just Sitting

Hello friends, according to the American Heart Association, being physically active is important to prevent heart disease and stroke, the nation’s No. 1 and No. 5 killers. To improve overall cardiovascular health, they suggest at least 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise or 75 minutes per week of vigorous exercise (or a combination of moderate and vigorous activity). Thirty minutes a day, five times a week is an easy goal to remember. You will also experience benefits even if you divide your time into two or three segments of 10 to 15 minutes per day.

I wanted to repost this from October as a gentle reminder for us to get up and move!

Go Red for Women 2015

Most of you know that my grandmother lived to be 98, and if her body didn’t fail her, I’m sure she would have lived until way past 100, just as her father did, why, because she remained active. Every morning she was up, and if she wasn’t going to the MOT Senior Center, she was downstairs in the kitchen eating breakfast and drinking a cup of coffee by 8:00 am.

If she stayed home for the day, in her room she would be “messing with papers”, talki ng on the phone, reading her Bible or writing in a journal. She loved to watch her favorite television programs, The Price is Right, and General Hospital, and after dinner it was “Wheel of Fortune”.

She ate when she was supposed to with a “little something sweet” for dessert.  I never heard her complain about pain or an illness other than when her arthritis acted up, but I knew because I could smell the Apple Cider Vinegar she used to rub on her legs.

Mama Thanksgiving 2006

My grandmother didn’t officially retire until she was in her 80’s but she never let her body just sit. She remained active both physically and mentally, three days a week at the Senior Center and Church on Sundays. She continued to grocery shop, wash and iron her own clothes until she no longer could. After she became bedridden, for a year I kept her body clean and her mind sharp, we watched TV, played board games, had long conversations and I read to her in the evenings.

Personally, I don’t think that we were put on this earth to work hard all of our lives without an opportunity to just rest and retire. Retirement however, should not be an open invitation to sit around doing nothing allowing our minds and bodies to rot. Doing nothing but sitting all day increases the risks of getting Type 2 Diabetes, a decline in cognitive skills, and possible death from a stroke, cancer and heart disease.

If you or someone you love finds themselves with nothing to do after retirement, take a STAND against just SITTING with these 10 Tips.  Try to get up and move for at least 10 minutes for every hour of sitting. TAKE A STAND AGAINST SITTING

1. Walk on a treadmill while watching TV

2. Take a short walk around the house or go up and down the stairs

3. Pace while talking on the phone

4. Weather permitting, go outdoors and pull a few weeds or sweep the stoop

5. Walk to the mailbox or around the block with a neighbor, the kids or a pet

6. March in place during commercials

7. Turn on the radio or music channel and dance like nobody is watching

8. Use soup cans and do arm curls

9. Use a Hula Hoop or jump rope between programs

10. Chores – stretch while cleaning the mirror, mopping the floor or dusting

Join in on the conversation, what tips do you have for getting in 30 minutes of physical activity each day?

Turn Your Shower into a Spa with Essio (ess-ee-oh)

Disclosure: I received the Aromatherapy Shower Kit in order to facilitate this review, however, opinions are 100% my own.

Hello friends, after a long, strenuous workout the first thing that I want to do is take a long, hot shower….naw…who am I kidding, you know I don’t engage in long, strenuous workouts!  I do however, work hard around the house and if you follow me on Instagram you would have seen my recently painted basement.

Whether your strenuous exercise comes from a workout with weights or from house and yard work, sometimes you want more than just a plain hot water shower. The Essio Aromatherapy Shower Kit turns an ordinary shower into a personal spa.

Aromatherapy is an ancient therapeutic practice with many benefits including improved mood and energy, reduced inflammation, increased blood circulation, improved skin tone and reduced stress.

The Essio Aromatherapy Shower Kit comes with one shower arm and 3 essential oil pods.  These pods contain 100% organic, pure and sourced from the finest oils in the world however, they do not leave an oily residue.  There are no harsh chemicals or additives and the pods are recyclable. essio Aromatherapy Shower Kit

There are six Essio Essential Oil Blends and the kit I received contained the following blends:

Breathe which is a refreshing blend of peppermint and eucalyptus that helps to clear the sinuses, decrease congestion and stimulates the entire body.

Passion is an blend of mandarin orange, lavender and patchouli which is a sensual aroma that arouses the mind and senses.

Unwind is an uplifting fragrance of citrus with spice and floral tones, creating a sense of lightness and stress relief.

The essential oil pods last for approximately 3-5 showers and these scents as well as others can be ordered directly from www.essioshower.com.

The Essio aromatheraphy shower arm is easy to install and extends beyond the length of a normal shower head with a gentle pull.  After removing a pod from the tray, take off the cap and attach it to the end of the arm with a gentle 1/4 counter-clockwise turn.  Turn on the water then tilt the pod downward under the stream of water to experience a spa shower. essio Aromatherapy Shower Kit

5 Vitamins For Women Over 50

Hello friends, does your medicine cabinet look like this?

vitamins and supplements

Actually, this is my kitchen cabinet and it’s where I keep my vitamins and supplements.

I remember my grandmother would laugh in amazement as to how many pills some of the women at the Senior Center were taking.  She never took a pill, not even an aspirin, as a matter of fact she almost choked taking an Advil.

She never took vitamins or supplements and still lived to be 98, the only “ailment” she suffered from was childbirth and arthritis.

Wellness Wednesday Eating healthy was her remedy which I would hope is the same for me, but just in case it’s not, I am taking my daily vitamins.

I know I have a few bottles of unnecessary ones, so I decided to check in at WEBMD to get their recommendations.

calcium Calcium

Osteoporosis, the bone-thinning disease that most commonly affects postmenopausal women, results from bones that have lost calcium and thickness.  Women between the ages of 51-70 should be taking 1,200 mg of calcium daily, more if doctor recommended.

Foods that are high is calcium include Spinach, Kale, Okra, Collard Greens, Soybeans, White beans, Sardines, Salmon, Perch and Rainbow Trout.    Foods that are fortified with calcium include orange juice, oatmeal and several brands of cold cereal.

vitamin d Vitamin D is calcium’s indispensable partner. It’s essential for proper absorption of the calcium you get in your diet. But as we get older, our ability to synthesize vitamin D in sunlight through our skin diminishes.  We must either get our Vitamin D through food, especially in the winter, or through supplements and you guys already know that I am Vitamin D deficient.

Foods that provide vitamin D include fatty fish like tuna, mackerel and salmon.  Foods fortified with vitamin D like dairy products, orange juice, soy mile, cereals, beef liver, cheese and egg yolks.

b12 Supplement B-12

Folate Folate

Folic acid helps to metabolize a substance called homocysteine, which has been clearly associated with the risk of heart disease and stroke.  High homocysteine levels has shown to be associated with an increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia.”

vitamin C and E Vitamin E and Vitamin C

Vitamin E and Vitamin C are both powerful antioxidants; studies have suggested that they may help protect against diseases of aging as varied as cancer, Alzheimer’s, and cataracts.Half Off Deals

However, just as my grandmother believed: “To get the vitamins and other nutrients we need, food should always be first, and in a balanced diet that includes fruits and vegetables, whole-grain bread, and cereals — especially those that are enriched,” says Smith Edge. “Any decision to supplement ideally should be based on professional input from a health professional.” whole grain bread fruit

So what’s in your medicine cabinet?

Pumping in Plastic – My Gas Station Germ Phobia

Wellness Wednesday

Hello Friends, I hope all is well in your world.

I bet if you asked the question “where is the “Happiest Place on Earth”,  most people would respond Florida, right? But how about if you asked this question, “where is the germiest place on Earth”

I don’t know about you, but for me it’s at the gas station, but it’s not the gas station’s bathrooms, it’s the gas station’s gas pumps! With a 100 mile daily commute I am at a gas station at least twice a week filling up, just follow me on Swarm/Foursquare to get an idea.  And it’s because I’m there so often I sometimes wonder about the person who used the tank handle before me and if the gas station attendants regularly clean the handles. pumping with plastic

Just the thought of touching all those germs from the millions of hands grosses me out to the max!  That is why I keep plastic gloves in my glove box, after all, that’s where gloves are supposed to be kept – right?  I also have a box of gloves hanging by the back door at home so I can grab a few if I run out of the ones in the car.

pumping gas in plastic gloves

I know people have stared at me at the pumps, but I don’t care and I feel better knowing that I am not getting or spreading germs at these pumps.  Afterall, with all these viruses and diseases being spread around it’s better to be safe than sorry.

What say you, do you have a germ phobia?

From the Hooters to the Tooter, Get Them Checked During Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Wellness Wednesday

Hello friends and welcome to this week’s feature of  “Wellness Wednesday”.

October is more than a month of falling leaves, trips to the Apple Orchards and Crock Pot meals. For me it also signals the time to put my legs in stirrups and to have my boobies mashed between two metal plates.   Yep, it’s time for the annual exams for the hooters and the tooter, which means I will also be scheduling my first colonoscopy.  Hubby’s recent diagnosis and ultimate surgery for small intestinal cancer made it even more of a priority for me.

colonoscopy

After checking both my work and home calendars I try to schedule my annual Pap Smear and Mammogram appointments on the same day.  It’s so easy to get caught up with work and family, not to mention the holiday hoopla then forget to make an appointment.

2013 annual mammy

Oftentimes, I will mix the day of appointments with a day of pampering starting with the dreaded pap smear, followed by lunch, then the mammogram and finally a pedicure ~ works for me!

I don’t care how old I am how long I’ve been having these procedures done, I never look forward to either.  However, it doesn’t matter how uncomfortable they are, these vital exams must be done, no if’s, and’s or butt’s about it!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month so if you haven’t made an appointment for your annual mammogram, please use this as a reminder to do so.  We all know someone who has been affected by breast cancer which is more of a reason to schedule an appointment ~ no excuses.

8 tips for better sleep Autumn brings about a lot of changes one of which is fewer hours of sunlight, it gets darker earlier but that doesn’t necessarily mean we are going to bed earlier or getting more sleep.  Long gone are the days of working from sunrise to sunset.

If you are anything like me, oftentimes you find yourself up late catching up on paperwork, paying bills, working on your blog or watching a late night talk show.  We all know that not getting adequate sleep interferes with our ability to function properly or concentrate while driving, completing daily chores and staying alert at work.  So how do we get a better night’s sleep, here are 8 tips:

  • The bedroom should be a place for sleep, relaxation and intimacy only, no exercise or office equipment in the room. sleep at the same time

  • Try to sleep by 10pm and wake by 6am these are the hours that are ideal for melatonin secretion.

EatSmart Precision MaxView Digital Bathroom Scale

Hello friends,

well it has been a little over two weeks since I started my weight loss journey and am proud to report that I am down 4 lbs already – Yay me!  I’m not one who likes to weigh in every day even if it’s thought to be more of a motivator if you do.

Product Review - EatSmart

We keep our bathroom scale downstairs in the powder room which is another reason why I don’t step on it daily – “out of sight – out of mind”   Now that we have the Eat Smart Precision MaxView Digital Scale I am more inclined to do so not only because it’s so precise, but because it has a large LCD display that I can read without my glasses.

Product Review - EatSmart

I let Tayair try out the scale first and was shocked to see that since his surgery he had lost 8 lbs, but was more shocked when I stepped on it and realized that I must have found them!  That is definitely more of a reason to put down the wine and bread and pick up the dumbbells and jump rope.

Product Review - EatSmart

I like this EatSmart Precision MaxView Bathroom Scale and have decided to move it upstairs into our bathroom as more of an incentive to reach my goal weight before my 53rd birthday on the 20th.

Product Review - EatSmart

The EatSmart Precision ViewMax Bathroom Scale has a 400 lb capacity, and comes with 2 year Guarantee.  The scale requires 2 AAA batteries which are included and it was ordered and shipped quickly from Amazon.com.

What motivates you to keep your weight in check?

The Amazing Miracle Cleanse

Hello friends,

most of you know that hubby was diagnosed with small intestinal cancer for which he had surgery on March 31st.  His last two appointments have shown no signs of it, but he will still need to have blood tests taken every few months.

He actually started having digestive problems at the age of 45, hence the annual colonoscopies before the cancer was detected.  However, even now with the removal of it he still experiences bowel problems.

Varies laxatives, both prescribed and over the counter fill our medicine cabinet but nothing seems to work all the time.  He eats plenty of fruits and veggies, very little to no red meat and is back to exercising, however, the problems still exists.

Now that I’ve the opportunity to order Green Tree Life Sciences “The Amazing Miracle Cleanse” from Amazon.com, I’m hoping it might actually be the miracle cleanse that works. This all natural detox and colon cleanse dietary supplement is supposed to provide results in 12-24 hours to those suffering from constipation, gas and bloating.

The Amazing Miracle Cleanse

The Amazing Miracle Cleanse can be taken as needed or as a 15-day cleanse detoxification when taking 2 capsules a day for 2 weeks. I’ll check with hubby to see if he wants to give it a try, who knows, this just might be just what his colon needs.  If he does and it works, I’ll come back to this post with the results.

Have you ever tried a cleanse?  If not, but are interested, use the code TOMOSON5 to receive a $10 discount on your order of The Amazing Miracle Cleanse.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
