High School Promposals

Hello Friends and Happy Fri-Yay!

If you are the parent of a high school student who will be attending the prom this year, you’ve probably heard about “Promposals“.  If not, let me explain, a promposal is when a guy, or girl asks someone to the prom but in a unique way using a sign, clothing, a prop or a photo.

These teenagers can get really creative with songs and videos and there are even promposal pics on Instagram and Tumblr as well as Twitter, Facebook and of course YouTube, just Google it using the hashtag #promposal.

A few weeks ago when I first heard about this, I rushed home to ask my son, but I was too late as he had already promposed to his date.  (and no, that wasn’t a bottle of alcohol).

I think they are cute as long as the teens don’t go overboard or take them too seriously like a marriage proposal.  Over the top promposals are not necessary and may cause stress to others who may not want to or can’t do them.

Senior Proms are a special once-in-a-lifetime event but they are also costly, so there’s no real need to add additional expenses into the mix.

What do you think?

Saturday with the Seniors

Hello Friends and Welcome to the Weekend!

I hope you all had a wonderful Valentine’s Day and regardless of where you went, what you ate or what gift you received, you were able to spend quality time with people you love because that’s all that truly matters.

Last Saturday hubby and I spent most of the day with our son at Appoquinimink High School’s Wrestling Team’s Senior Day – now that’s a mouthful!  Some of you may know that my son started wrestling after the Thanksgiving break and he finished the season with a 5-5 record due to a knee injury.  Saturday was his last match, which he lost but all in all he enjoyed the experience and bonding with his teammates and the coaches.

Prior to the match, each soon-to-graduate Senior escorted their parents/guardians onto the gym floor and presented their mother with a rose.

Malik enjoyed wrestling this season and regretted that he didn’t join the team during his earlier years of High School.

Wrestling at 170 lbs, this was his last match and you can see the disappointment on his face after the disappointing loss.

Loss after a long and tough match

But like the good athlete he is, it only lasted a few minutes and after talking to his dad, he was back enjoying the rest of the matches with his teammates.

It was a great day and watching the team knowing that it’s the end of the season was more bittersweet for me than for him.

Delaware State University ~ College Tour

Hello Friends and Happy Monday

The weekend’s weather definitely made it officially Fall with frost blanketing the grass and the sun’s rays piercing through the colorful Autumn leaves. Saturday morning we were up early to drive 30 minutes south down to Dover…my shortest commute of the week! Our youngest, a senior in High School who just shrugs his shoulders when asked where he wants to attend college, knows that it will be somewhere so we decided to start close to home.

Delaware State University

I graduated from Del State with a BS degree in Elementary Education in 1983, and hubby with the same in 1981, (after transferring from the University of Delaware, so we would love for him to attend our Alma Mater.

Delaware State University open house

Early before the 9:00 am start time, Memorial Hall Gymnasium was packed with parents, their sons and daughters attending the Fall Open House, all talking or listening to the faculty reps about the various programs offered at Delaware State University. Our son hasn’t decided on a major but was interested in Health & Public Policy as well as Hospitality & Tourism Management but we ended up taking the tour with the “Undecided” group.

Thinking that both his parents have a degree in Education, and neither one of us still teaches, he thinks he has plenty of time to declare a major, reminding me of the sitcom “A Different World“.

DSU October 2013 234

The opening program began with the singing of the National Anthem, followed by performances by the DSU Approaching Storm Marching Band and Cheerleaders.  Welcome addresses from DSU President, Dr. Harry Williams, Dr. Alton Thompson and Mr. Atkins and finally by Mr. and Miss DSU.

We broke into groups according to Majors to walk the campus and to visit the Departmental buildings starting at the Library, then on to the EH Building, the gym, Radio Station, a Co-Ed Dormitory, and ending with lunch in the Dining Hall.

There were so many memories that came flooding back as hubby and I walked and talked about our days at Del State.  We were pointing out various locations to our son, but you know he didn’t appear overly interested and just wanted to leave, but overall I think he enjoyed it. Once we got home he was very interested in checking his SAT scores, so, all in all, it was definitely worth it because he is at least thinking about attending DSU.

Delaware State University is an HBCU that was once named The State College for Colored Students.  DSU was established on May 15, 1891, and is rich in African American history as evidenced throughout the campus.
