Westown Movies Pre-Grand Opening & Charity Night

Thursday evening I along with many other Facebook sweepstakes winners had an opportunity to attend the Pre-Grand Opening and Charity Night held at Westown Movies. The excitement for this event began when it was first announced that a movie theatre was going to be built in Middletown.  Most residents in the M.O.T. (Middletown/Odessa/Townsend) area were happy and anxiously waited for what seemed like a long time for this much needed family entertainment venue. Westown Movies Westown Movies Opening 035 Westown Movies did not miss a beat in incorporating the local flair in it’s designs and features of the 44,500 square foot theatre. Upon entering the lobby you are greeted by a 1,100-square foot mural showcasing Middletown’s familiar landmarks Cochoran Square, the Everett Theatre and scenes from the Old Tyme Peach Festival. Westown Movies Opening 074 Thursday night’s event also showcased and benefited local organizations with donations to the Middletown’s Big Ball Marathon; the Appoquinimink Foundation and the Ronald McDonald House in Wilmington. Of course, I chose Wolverine and it definitely was an awesome experience, the picture clarity and magnificent surround sound was like no other!  Westown Movies Opening Westown Movies Opening Westown Movies Opening Another home town aspect of Westown Movies are the food selections from the self serve concession.  In addition to normal popcorn and soda offerings, other foods being sold are from local Middletown businesses including Pat’s Pizza and Half Baked Patisserie.  Westown Movies Opening Westown Movies Opening Westown Movies is helping in the growth of our community, the economics of our state and bringing jobs and family fun to the area which is a win-win for everyone. Kevin Hart Gives Back

Hello Friends and Happy Saturday

You’ve probably heard that comedian and Philadelphia native Kevin Hart who makes people laugh on stage, in movies and on television in the Real Husbands of Hollywood recently gave back to his school district

kevin hart

Kevin Hart, 34, who grew up in the area near 15th Street and Erie Avenue donated 500 Sony touch-screen laptops to the district and the Parks and Recreation Department.. “Literally seeing the kids putting the computers to use put a smile on my face.”

“I am what I am today because of Philadelphia. This city made me … All of my education came from this city,” Hart told the students and staff at Hartranft School as Mayor Nutter and city and school officials looked on.

Having been successful in stand-up comedy, movies and reality television, Hart said he wanted to help the city with its education challenges.

“You now have the ability to take these computers and do what nobody else can do, which is learn right now,” Hart told the students in the school’s auditorium. “I want you guys to take advantage of this, man. This is something I’m very, very serious about.”

Two hundred computers were given to 27 recreation centers and 300 were donated to eight schools, including Leeds Middle School, McCloskey, Rhodes and Weir.

Thank you Kevin for giving back, this is a great lesson from which we all should learn.

Tyler Perry on the Oprah Winfrey Network

Oprah Winfrey launched the OWN Network on January 1, 2011, but I have to admit that I didn’t know what channel it was on nor what shows were being featured.  That has since changed with the introduction of  Tyler Perry’s two new hit shows, The Haves and The Have Nots on Tuesday nights and Love Thy Neighbor on Wednesday nights.  My television cable box is now locked on VerizonFios Channel 161!

Tyler Perry, the genius behind the “Madea” stage plays and movies, had made his mark on the small screen with the TBS sitcoms House of Payne, Meet The Browns and For Better or Worse, which was based on his movie Why Did I Get Married?but he has taken it to a whole new level with The Haves and The Have Nots!

Think of Dynasty, Falcon Crest and Dallas all rolled up for the 21st century, where the deceit and duplicity is doubled, but praying and thanking Jesus is the foundation.  Not only is prayer and a strong belief in God prominently displayed in these shows, it is also what makes Tyler Perry the man that he is today.  I honestly believe that his mother is sitting in Heaven on the right side of God, nudging him, saying, “see…see…that’s my boy…watch him work!”

Love Thy Neighbor is a sitcom featuring Mama Hattie, a strong woman running a diner, working hard and trying to keep her recently divorced daughter off her couch, because she just got her recently employed grandson off of it!  I love Hattie’s feistiness and warm heart, and her voice will you have sitting upright.  It seems as though all the cast members work extremely well together, each bringing their own style and flair.  The stand outs are  Tika Sumpter, who plays Candace, the beautiful devil diva in The Haves and The Have Nots, and Jonathon Chase, who plays Sam in Love Thy Neighbor, a hilarious man-child whose comedic timing and mannerisms reminds me of a young Jim Carrey!

If you haven’t seen The Haves and The Have Nots or Love Thy Neighbor, I urge you to check them out, I know once you start you’ll be hooked.  When you do, make sure to join in on the weekly Twitter Chats because you never know, your tweet just might be retweeted by Oprah or Tyler – mine were!
