Hello friends and Happy Tuesday
Last week I attended Delaware Today’s signature event, Women in Business Luncheon (Upstate) which was held at The Chase Center on the Riverfront in Wilmington. This annual event is held to showcase and highlight Delaware’s women in business and provides a great opportunity to network, share and connect with others. It was a warm and beautiful December day made even more so by the smiling faces on the many men and women who came out in support.
The lobby of the Chase Center was filled with hundreds of people engaged in lively conversations, and various Sponsors of the luncheon had tables of information, giveaways and games. Music by Phillip Berger entertained the crowd with mellow sounds until noon, then we made our way into the main Ballroom for lunch and the afternoon program.
Inside the Riverfront Ballroom each table was decorated with a fresh and fragrant floral arrangement provided by Belak Flowers. The owner Barbara Williams was seated next to me and we had a pleasant conversation throughout lunch. On each seat was a take-away-tote bag provided by Del-One and it contained a few goodies from Bayada, YMCAde, Goldey Beacom College, Christiana Care, Ursuline Academy, Morris James LLP and Continental Jewelers.
The meal was delicious and consisted of a mixed greens salad, 1/2 Cornish Hen, Couscous, Steamed Broccoli and Cauliflower. It was definitely far more than what I normally eat, so unfortunately the slice of cake remained uneaten!
Dr. Maria Hess, Editor-in-Chief of Delaware Today Magazine opened the program acknowledging the recipients of this year’s Women in Business Awards. As each name was read the women stepped to the podium and it was wonderfully encouraging to see the diversity among them all. You can find the full list of recipients along with their photos on the Delaware Today website.
Emcee and NBC10 anchor, Tracy Davidson introduced the guest speaker, Dr. Janice Nevin, Chief Medical Officer, Christiana Care Health Systems.
Dr. Nevin gave an enlightening and sometimes humorous presentation. She acknowledged the men and women who challenged her, giving her the resiliency to break through sexual barriers that once held her back. Graduating from the once all-male St. Andrews High School in Middletown, was just the beginning of her becoming “the first female” in many areas of her life including during Medical School.
Sheer determination and learning to “lean in” makes her the wonderful wife, mother, and Chief Medical Officer who is compassionate and resilient despite the odds.
The day ended just as it started with lots of lively conversations, networking, sharing and smiles.
Thank You Delaware Today for honoring these wonderful women!

Last week I taught another class, this one was “Blogging For Your Small Business” held at The Bear Public Library, in Bear, DE. It was the second blogging class that I had an opportunity to teach thanks to The Money School of Delaware. There weren’t as many students enrolled in this class which allowed us more time for questions and answers as well as to do a little networking.

As an educator it’s job satisfaction when you can share your knowledge with others especially to those who are eager to learn. If you are in need of housing services, rentals, lease or purchases, Willard can be reached at williamswillard993@yahoo.com.
Listening to the questions
I would like to once again thank The Money School of Delaware for giving me an opportunity to be a guest instructor. I know that it is a stepping stone leading to something great for my retirement years…yes, I’m putting it into the atmosphere!

The 2012 holiday shopping weekend began with “Gray Thursday” next it was “Black Friday” on to “Small Business Saturday” and finally there was what I called, “Soulful Shopping Sunday”. The Home Based Business Chamber of Commerce (DelMarVa Chapter) held its 2nd Annual Holiday Extravaganza at the Executive Banquet Center in Newark, DE. Outside the Banquet Center the morning air was chilly with a slight hint of mid-day snow but inside the sun streamed through glass doors creating a silhouetted pathway into a large conference room. Inside that room were brightly covered tables of 43 vendors who were busily adding the final touches to their “stores”. Delaware and it’s neighboring sister states have an abundance of Home Based Business entrepreneurs and this was a perfect venue for showcasing and networking.
The event began with an Opening Ceremony consisting of award presentations and recognition of members including the first and only member of the Junior Home Based Business Chamber of Commerce. Justine D’Artist, a 12 year old young lady who creates Duct Tape accessories, roses, wallets and bags. Each vendor was then handed the microphone to give a brief introduction of themselves and their businesses. By noon people began to trickle in and were presented with a Gift Bag and a “Visit The Vendor” form which if returned and signed by all the vendors would become a raffle ticket, eligible for a cash prize. Several of the vendors provided door prizes which were awarded throughout the day. The $5 admission fee included free Hors D’oeuvres, coloring and face painting for the kids, a live performance by Best Kept Soul, which is a local band who had people out on the dance floor. There was also performances by Praise Dancers and the Holy Soldiers and His Embrace.
As I walked around stopping to talk to several vendors, I noted that regardless of their product or service they all had one thing in common – true passion and sheer determination. Entrepreneurs and small business owners are America’s life blood which keeps the economy strong and resilient and for that they should be commended.
Jaimie and Ira, Prez and VP of the HBB Chamber of Commerce are doing an excellent job in exposing and expanding the DelMarVa Chapter. They have made it the fastest growing chapter and recently received the “Chamber of the Year” Award. Currently there are 7 National Chapters and DelMarVa includes Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey, and DC. As a non-profit their funding is received from sponsorship’s, events such as this and membership dues. If you are a Home Based Business owner and are interested in becoming a member, please contact Jaimie Shanklin at 302-784-5311.
This was by far the best stress-free shopping event of the weekend – shopping, eating, drinking and dancing – you can’t beat that with a stick!
