Flying Flat – The Glamour is Gone

Flying Flat Lined – The Glamour is Gone
Most of my readers will remember when flying was an exciting and somewhat glamorous adventure. Dressing up to board a large aeroplane was the norm, never traveling in jeans, sneakers nor flip flops and shorts.
Having to remove your shoes, belt, jacket, coat, coins, keys, wallet, jewelry then standing in front of a full body scanner with your hands held high…getting patted down by a TSA agent makes flying less glamorous and much more stressful and sometimes downright embarrassing!
Passengers are herded onto too small planes like cattle, charged more to check a bag and given miniature food items that should be part of a kid’s board game. A few sips from a can of soda to keep your mouth from becoming dry as the Sahara while praying there will be no turbulence.
No more hot meals, cold sandwiches, fruit and cheese platters or even headphones unless you are willing to pay extra for them…oh and by the way… there will be no cash or travelers cheques (remember them) transactions are now made with a swipe of a credit card.
Granted, not all the changes to air travel have been bad, at least there’s no more on-board smoking! However, the excessive fees, multiple city stops, too small seats and tiny bathrooms definitely makes flying less glamorous but it hasn’t stopped millions of people from doing so on a daily basis.
Now having said all of that the time has come for us to travel. It has been almost 7 years since our last family vacation to Orlando which is way too long! So I will endure the stress of flying because it comes with a summer vacation to Puerto
Plata!!!!
REPOSTED FROM 2015 – THINGS HAVE ACTUALLY GOTTEN WORSE!!!!
Do you remember when flying was fun?
Bon voyage and have a great time!
Thank you.
I’ve heard so many good things about Punta Cana, can’t wait to see the pics! Enjoy!

Gurl, we haven’t been on vacation in so long, I won’t know how to act!
Flying is definitely not nearly as glamourous as it once was unless you have a private jet! And the fees are truly ridiculous, but here’s to hoping you guys have safe travels and a great vacation.
Thank you my dear, I don’t even think the luxury liners exist anymore!
While all the rules changed before I was legal, I did experience some of the “glamour” of flying as a kid/tween! It was awesome! Now it is TERRIBLE. I get my hair patted down on a regular. 🙁
No…not the hair…now that is sad. It wasn’t too long ago because I remember carrying extra luggage full of treats for Tayair and Malik when we flew to Orlando in the summer.
Enjoy your trip sis! I hate flying because they charge for everything, the seats are so small unless you fly first class, and the Food is nothing more than snacks.
I know, I was rudely awaken to the changes when I flew to Cali…nothing like back in the day!
I haven’t been on a plane in about 8 years. Being that my first plane ride was in the late 90’s, I miss the glamorous days of flying. But I think it would be fun to travel by air if it was like it was in the 50’s and 60’s.
I traveled in the 60’s as a youngster and remember getting treated very nicely by the airline stewardess and eating big sandwiches.
Enjoy your vacay my Sista!!!
Thanks sis…getting excited!
7 years since your last vacation is a while my love. I’d say you’re definitely in need of a well-deserved vaca! And Punta Cana sounds amazing!! I wish you an absolutely fabulous and amazing trip (even if the actual flying part is way less glamorous). Enjoy your trip beautiful, you deserve it.
Yes, life changed in 2009 and I never could accumulate 40 hours with the company I work for…but I am not worried about the money – it’s time to jet off!
I was just telling my 11-year-old when we flew to California last week all about how it used to be. I used to get dressed up. It was a big big big family event. They served us food… All of it 🙂
She couldn’t believe it.
FlashForward to my leaving the news on this morning as she ready to walk out the door to school and she saw the whole debacle that occurred on United.
She could not believe it.
Far we have fallen….
I know, I could believe what I was seeing. How can anyone in their right mind forceable remove a passenger who paid to be packed into an overloaded plane in such a barbaric manner!!!
I remember dressing up and flying was such a treat so last night I left myself a note to repost this blog post. Thank you for reading, commenting and sharing.
