Dollar Tree Deals

Dollar Tree is now accepting manufacturer’s coupons which makes a lot of items FREE! I had a $1.00 off coupon for the Pepperidge Farms Jingos and they are awesome. I also have coupons for Campbell soup but around the holidays it’s cheaper at the grocery stores.

Michael Eric Dyson in "Why You Should VOTE"

Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, was a guest speaker last night at the University of Delaware, in Trabant Hall. The event was presented by CPAB and co-sponsored by Center for Black Culture. The evening started with a tribute to Fannie Lou Hamer by Ms. Glenis Redmond, poet and author.

The program was free and open to the public but was geared more towards the college students. In the lobby there were several tables manned by students registering people to vote, seperated by states. The audience was a mix of young and old, black and white, students, coaches and staff. I was there with my husband and sons listening to historical facts and stories, some funny and others not so much, some even sad.

Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, is a Professor, Author, Radio and TV host, and a regular guest on The Ed Show on MSNBC. He began by thanking those who invited him, weaving in sports, music, and educational antidotes, some old school for the young crowd, and new school for us older folk. After about 10 minutes of acknowledgments and shout outs he began, “Why You Should Vote”.

Unfortunately, there are many young people who do not plan to vote, some of which have been very vocal, including a talented rapper. He has too many not-so-good reasons as to why he will not vote and many of his fans are listening. What he and others may fail to realize is that there are still places in the world where people cannot vote but wish they could.

Dr. Dyson was not there to tell the audience who to vote for, but just to vote and he laid out these 3 reasons.

Reason #1

“YOU CAN”

many people in the world can’t; it expands democracy

yes, the system is not perfect and has problems but as referenced by this statement: “I may not be perfect but I am perfect for you” – Grace Jones

Reason #2

“HONOR THE STRUGGLE”

people fought, bled and died for the right to vote; blacks and women were unable to vote; Dr. King only had the opportunity to vote the last 3 years of his life

Reason #3

“UPHOLD CIVIC VIRTUE”

help and uphold others, we are the 47%

Failure to vote is failing your ultimate duty as a citizen

The program ended with a question and answer session, unfortunately we didn’t stay the entire time. I did hear him give simple, down to earth, easy to remember responses for students to give those who say they are not voting. It was a very good presentation and the applause was heavy, now just praying that the students in attendance will vote because our future depends upon it.

2012 Chevy Volt Tour

GM has taken their showrooms on tour traveling to various locations giving people an opportunity to test drive their 2012 Chevy Volt electric cars. Haas Group International, a tenant in our office park hosted the event this week. The showroom was set up in the upper parking lot where several vehicles were parked next to information podiums, others were lined up to be test driven. As a thank you for participating you were eligible to enter a drawing for an iPad, and were given a free insulated tote bag.

Before the test drive you needed to show your driver’s license, and if you wanted to enter the drawing, complete an entry form. A wrist band was placed on your arm and then you stood in line for the next available car. It was like standing in line for a ride at Disney but much quicker! A rep sat in the passenger seat and I didn’t drive far but it didn’t take long to realize that the vehicles are definitely worth the investment. If not for the fact that it uses electric at less than $2.00 per charge, plugged overnight into a 110volt or several hours in a 220volt outlet. It was a smooth and quiet ride, had quick pickup and was not sluggish. The dashboard controls looked futuristic without being overly distracting. The comfort and roominess was amazing, my co-worker and back seat passenger is 6 feet, and she was comfortable, noting that her son who is 6’7, would also be comfortable driving this vehicle. We also gave a video testimonial which can be heard here.

GM is offering participating companies a discount and in addition to the government’s rebate program it is a great incentive to purchase if you are in the market. The wheels in my head were spinning because my 180 minute daily commute is costing me almost $100 a week in gas, and my son is eyeing my car as his own. If you get a chance stop by a Chevy/GM dealership and give it a test drive or if you’re lucky, they’ll roll up to an office park next to you.

This would have been a great birthday gift!

Free Thrifted Haul

My co-worker knows that I love thrifting, she and I have even gone to Goodwill together during a lunch break. Ā She knows there is no shame in my game when it comes to thrifting clothes especially for my sons. Ā Last week she had a bag of clothes in her car that her son had outgrown, and asked if I wanted them. Ā I could sense she was a little hesitant with the offer because she followed up with, Ā “if you can’t use them, you can donate them to Goodwill”. Ā  Of course, I said, “yes”. Ā Later in the day she put the bag into my car so I didn’t see the contents until I got home that evening. Ā This bag contained some great stuff for my son who will be starting back to school next week!

The shopping bag was filled with shirts, pants, shorts and jeans, all in excellent condition and smelling freshly laundered. Ā The name brand items included Old Navy, Banana Republic, Tommy Hilfiger, Nautica, JC Penney’s and The Gap. Ā My sons were thrilled with the haul and each went through the items designating which ones they wanted. Ā The pants fit nicely around the waist, but hubby will need to alter the length because my co-worker’s son stands 6 ‘ 8″, taller than anyone in my house! Ā  This was my first FREE thrifted haul ever!!!

FAT ~ FREE ~ FRIDAY !!

Woohoo, it’s FRI-YAY, the Friday before a holiday – let the eating and drinking begin (oh wait… a few more hours before the drinking can begin)! At least once per quarter a coworker and I leave our desks for lunch and go to PrimoHoagies. for the best hoagie (wedge to a New Yorker, sub to a Delawarean) this side of town! Their menu is gigantic, it takes several minutes to read and then decide what I want and there are always free samples to try while waiting. Today’s freebies were pasta salads and Herr’s Pretzels. Having a Primo Hoagie for lunch is a great way to end the work week and begin the weekend.

Blessings to you and yours for a FAN-TAB-U-LOUS weekend – be safe!!

Today’s special

It’s the bread that make the hoagies so good.

So many choices and this is only part of the full menu

Happy Memorial Day Weekend – FREE Flag from WDEL

During my drive home I listen to WDEL 1150AM and yesterday it was announced that they would be giving away FREE American Flags at various locations throughout the state. Ā This morning heading back home I passed their tent at Arner’sĀ RestaurantĀ on Rt 13 south and because the holiday traffic hadn’t kicked into high gear, I made a U-turn and went back.

Thank you WDEL 1150AM Ā for the Flag and THANK YOU VETS for bravely serving our country!

Happy Memorial Day 2012!
