Free Resources for Caregivers in honor of Father’s Day | Ad Council & AARP Campaign

Taking care of grandparents and parents takes its toll on caregivers who are often sandwiched between the activities of children, a busy work schedule and the needs of aging loved ones.

In 2008, when my grandmother’s health began to deteriorate I became her primary caregiver until the day she died in 2009 at the age of 98. Fortunately I was able to work from home most days but trying to keep a normal schedule with both boys in school and the daily grind of running a household oftentimes became overwhelming.

Although hubby and the boys were there to support me, I wish I had know about the resources offered by AARP which would have been a tremendous help.  AARP offers several resources to help the nearly 44 million Americans – 1 in 5 adults – who are family caregivers for a relative or friend over the age 50.

THE THANKS PROJECT AARP_FathersDay_v3

The Thanks Project is an online platform that enables caregivers to publically recognize the parents for whom they care. Each individual ‘thanks’ will be integrated into the interactive tapestry, representing the 42 million caregivers in the US. Caregivers everywhere deserve to be recognized for the important work that they do, and Father’s Day remind us why it’s worth it.

CAREGIVING RESOURCE CENTER

The Caregiving Resource Center by the AARP offers articles by experts, answers to pressing questions, the latest in caregiver news and a helpline for caregivers to connect on a daily basis.

You can also read about 12 Resources Every Caregiver Should Know About on the Caregiving Resource Center Page.

PREPARE TO CARE: A PLANNING GUIDE FOR FAMILIES

Prepare to Care is a downloadable pdf e-book that walks caregivers through the steps of starting the conversation with aging parents about upcoming decisions that will  have to be made and to form a team and create a plan before an emergency arises rather than waiting until a crisis occurs to act.

At the end of the guide is a both a glossary and two pages of additional resources for caregivers handling a range of issues related parents from Alzheimers care to legal issues affecting older adults.

5 Dad’s Day Gifts for Fathers Over Fifty

Hello friends, I hope all is well in your world.  Sunday is Father’s Day and the stores have been advertising great gift ideas for dads, everything from ties to tires.  However, if you are like me and the father of your children is over fifty, you know there are some gifts that you can give him that are better than anything bought in a store.

Here a just 5 suggestions of Dad’s Day Gifts for Fathers over 50

gifts for father's over fifty

  • Eating Right:  as a man gets older, good nutrition plays an even more important role in how well he ages.  Hubby and I were in the grocery store and one of the ingredients that we focused on was sodium.  The daily recommended amount of sodium should not come from just one meal.  Have you checked the sodium content in a can of soup, you’d be surprised just how much there is. I enjoy cooking so when shopping we purchase more fresh fruits and veggies, fish, turkey and less red meat.  Hubby still likes his sweets but has cut down considerably since his surgery, so this weekend I’ll make him a little treat like this No-Bake Cheesecake. Enjoy!

  • Staying Active: staying physically active is important for everyone, and even more so for men as they age.  Whether it’s taking a walk together after a meal, going to the gym, swimming at the Y, lifting weights or playing golf, men need to keep their bodies physically active.  Having a healthy sex life is also important for men over the age of 50, not only because it’s a great form of exercise but it could reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer.   Remember ladies, the marital bed is undefiled (Hebrews 13:4), so give him a good workout! The simpsons

  • Looking Good – men enjoy looking into the mirror and seeing a healthy smile, a well groomed face and hair as much as we like seeing them.  So give him a compliment when you see him using body washes, lotions, and other grooming products.  This not only makes him feel good but it also gives him a boost of confidence that is a gift that keeps on giving! Dove products for men

  • Healthy Sleep – turn off that TV, iPod, Tablet, iPhone and the lights for a good night’s rest, which is rejuvenating and slows the aging process. If you have a lumpy mattress or ill fitting sheets, perhaps you may need new set of linen or a new mattress especially if it’s older than half his age! need a new mattress

  • Prevention – an annual checkup is definitely vital for a healthy and happy life, so when your man makes an appointment he should ask to have the following tests completed during that visit:

  • Blood pressure

  • Cholesterol level

  • Blood sugar level

  • Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) making a doctor's appt

  • Testosterone level

Tropical Traditions Virgin Coconut Oil | Giveaway #spon

Disclosure: Tropical Traditions provided me with a free sample of this product to review, and I was under no obligation to review it if I so chose. Nor was I under any obligation to write a positive review or sponsor a product giveaway in return for the free product.

What I don’t know would make a whole new world”

That was what my grandmother would say whenever she learned something new, and considering she lived to be 98, it was usually only on rare occasions. However, I’m sure she would have said it, just as I did when I received a 32 oz jar of Tropical Traditions Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil.

Two weeks ago I had no idea they were over 100 different ways in which to use Virgin Coconut Oil, and it blows my mind just thinking about a few of those amazing uses. Virgin Coconut Oil can be used as a health and beauty product, in cooking, baking, making sauces, dips or simply adding to a hot beverage or mixed in a green smoothie. I am in no way making any health claims but if you want to know more about the benefits of coconut oil, check out this website http://coconutoil.com/

One morning for breakfast, I decided to try it in a green smoothie so I added a tablespoon of Tropical Traditions Virgin Coconut Oil to a handful of kale, ½ a banana, and a teaspoon of flax seeds, when mixed with water it became a tasty tropical coconut flavored smoothie.

Hubby and I now use it every morning in our smoothies and although we may switch up on the fruits we use, it’s never without the Coconut Oil.

Mother’s Day was a great time to try it as a baking ingredient. I used a box of muffin mix and substituted the vegetable oil with Virgin Coconut Oil using the same measurements, however, it needed to be melted first, so a few seconds in the microwave did the trick.

I allowed the milk and eggs to come to room temperature before adding the Virgin Coconut Oil so that it wouldn’t solidify in the cold batter. My hubby and mini men ate them all except two which I had to hide in order to have them later!

I also use it as a butter replacement on my morning toast.

Mother’s Day weekend was also a good time to try and make a natural body scrub. It was very easy to make using two cups of Tropical Traditions Virgin Coconut Oil blended with a cup of white sugar and 5 drops of Essential Oil. This mixture made 3 small jars of the body scrub, which is way more than enough for me, so I will probably be gifting a jar to a friend and then saving one for Father’s Day as a gift to hubby.

Like I said, there are over 100 ways in which to use Virgin Coconut Oil so it will definitely be a staple in our house both in the kitchen and the bathroom.

How about you, what are some ways in which you would or have used Virgin Coconut Oil?

If you’ve never tried it, here’s your chance, Tropical Traditions, has offered to send a 32 oz jar of Tropical Traditions Virgin Coconut Oil to one of my lucky readers.

Father’s Day 2013

Hello Friends, I hope everyone had a nice Father’s Day weekend!

Father's Day 2013 003

Hubby had a nice one even with a change in dinner plans, but I was able to pull off what I think was a better meal than what we would have had at a restaurant.  Yesterday he played a little one-on-one with Malik and fortunately, no injuries were sustained!

Father’s Day Friday

Hello Friends and Happy FRI-YAY!

Sunday is Father’s Day, a day to honor and celebrate our dad; daddy; pops; pop-pop; grandfather; brother; uncle or significant other.  Sunday is also the 14th anniversary of my father’s death.  Talvage Cross, Jr., my father, didn’t raise me nor were we close I did however, love him very much.

He died on June 16, 1999, at the age of 61, a heart attack in a library in Cincinnati, Ohio.  A man of meager means who loved to read, so for him to die in a Public Library was profound.

Talvage Cross, was a hard working and decent man; the man that married my mother in 1960; the man that assisted in my creation in 1961; the man that walked me down the aisle in 1990; and the man that consoled me when my sister, his daughter died in 1992.  My sister, Gloria Cross, Jr., was named after his own sister Gloria who also died at an early age.

He was also the man that died before my sons had a chance to meet him, the first time they saw him he was laid in a coffin.  They like me do not have a grandfather, they will never call another man granddaddy or pops, because hubby’s dad is also deceased.

On Sunday, my sons will be celebrating and honoring their father, another great man, or as Malik likes to call him “the old man” and for that I am blessed.

I am wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

Father’s Day 2012

My father, Talvage Cross, Jr., made me but didn’t raise me, I did love and respect him and he even walked me down the aisle on my wedding day in 1990.  He’s dead and buried in Cincinnati, Ohio and there are times that I think about him but not usually on Father’s Day.  The only time my sons saw him, he was in the casket and they were too young to remember the flight to Ohio let alone his funeral.  I do regret that my sons never got a chance to meet either grandfathers, both of which are deceased.

My sons will never know the 2nd generation granddaddy love but they will always know their

father’s love.

My husband has an awesome relationship with them and for that Father’s Day will always be special for them but more importantly special to me!
