Swahili Kitchen

Hello Friends and Happy Fri-Yay!

Is your palate stuck in a rut…do you find yourself always ordering the same foods…pizza, cheese steaks or Chinese takeout?  Do you want something different while supporting a new local business, then I suggest you try Swahili Kitchen on Main Street in Middletown.

Swahili Kitchen specializes in East African cuisine, specifically recipes from Tanzania, and although the menu is new it’s actually the second part of Manhattan Bagel, also owned by Rishen Patel and his wife Heeral.

The concept of adding a different offering in an already thriving breakfast business was a great idea, Rishen stated that after 2 p.m. no one was coming in to buy bagels so he decided to offer his native foods.  In Middletown you can find every type of food except African style which is what motivated the Patels to open Swahili Kitchen.

On Sunday, hubby and I stopped in and decided to try the chicken and beef items from the promotional menu, which also included Pork Kebabs, but you know we don’t eat pork.  If you like mildly spicy foods you will definitely enjoy the Chicken dishes, especially the marinated leg quarters called Sekela.  There was just the right balance of seasoning including curry and the chips weren’t soggy even with the veggie topping.  The promotional prices, currently $5 and under were very reasonable considering the portion sizes which were more than enough for leftovers.

The Chicken Mishkaki is listed as being served on a skewer, but since we had take out it was simply placed in a Styrofoam container.  The Tamarind Sauce was a perfect compliment to this dish of very tender chicken cubes, potatoes, green peppers and onions slices.

What are called “chips” in Africa are actually what we call “fries”, and they are topped with a veggie mix of shredded carrots, cabbage and red onions and a perfect blend of spices.

Chicken Pili Pili is a spicy BBQ leg quarter served with white rice and coleslaw

Dinner was excellent and the side sauce added just the right amount of “fire” for me!

So this weekend if you are in the mood for something different head over to Swahili Kitchen which is located at 400 W. Main St. and their hours of operation are 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday (closed Monday)

Summer Snacks From Super G

Hello Friends and Happy Fri-Yay!

Today is officially the first day of Summer 2013, and school has ended for both my husband and son so let the summer snacking begin!  Small children aren’t the only ones who like to snack during the day, my guys are always in and out of the frig or looking in the pantry trying to find something to eat.  During a recent grocery shopping trip to Giant/Super G, I found a few new snacks that I think will hold them over between meals.

Fruit is always a great snack and I like to have a variety on hand, grapes, cherries, bananas, apples or grapefruit.  I recently began purchasing Mini Sweet Peppers from Sunset Grown which can be eaten raw, in a salad or stuffed with a soft cheese like Laughing Cow. Laughing Cow Lite Creamy Swiss is only 35 calories per wedge and are a great snack with the mini peppers or with a piece of fruit. fruit

Sunset Gourmet Tomatoes are an easy grab-and-go snack and they also add variety to a salad.

Crackers another great snack and these Ritz Crackerfuls are available with Peanut Butter or Cheddar Cheese filled.  There are 6 individually wrapped packs in each box, these are made with real peanut butter and 6g of whole grains which to me makes it a healthy snack.

Jello has made several changes over the years and not just to their standard flavors of Chocolate and Vanilla puddings. They have added new flavors with toppings like this Turtle Sundae, a more grown-up option.  Unfortunately the packaging has also changed from 6 containers per package to 4, and these new flavors contain only 2.

Dole brand, a leader in fruit snacks have recently introduced Fruit Squish’ems!  As you can see these Apple Strawberry fruit pouches aren’t just for tiny toddler’s hands, big teenager hands grab them too!  Made from fresh apples in the USA they are only 60 calories each and also make a great grab and go snack.

A new product by Hormel are these REV Snack Wraps which come in 8 varieties including Pepperoni, Ham & Cheese, Meat Lovers Pizza, Spicy Italian Style, Peppered Turkey, Italian Style Ham and Hot Pepper Ham.  I tried one and felt it needed a little mayo or mustard and could have used a few seconds in the microwave to soften the flatbread.

When waiting for dinner is “just too long” these microwavable Hormel Compleats Cafe Creations fill the bill.  With a variety to choose from including Chicken Chipotle Pasta and Creamy Chicken Carbonara, no one should have to “starve to death” waiting for dinner!

Last but not least are these new Lunchables Uploaded. I hadn’t purchased a Lunchables since my sons were were in Elementary School, but I had a $1.00 off coupon so I decided to give it a try. Included in this package are the ingredients to make a 6-inch sub; a few slices of Oscar Mayer Lean Turkey, and Kraft cheddar cheese, a packet of Kraft fat free mayo, a 6-inch sub bun, a 10 oz bottle of Spring Water, a Kool-Aid Tropical Punch Single pack, a Pringles Snack Stacks Potato Crisps and 2 Hershey’s Kisses, not bad for $2.50!

OOTD – Pink Pantsuit

Good Monday Morning Friends, I hope you had a nice weekend and if you are a Raven’s fan – CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

We didn’t have a Super Bowl party but my son invited two of his buddies over to watch the game and they had a great time.  I made chicken wings, pizza and slow cooked barbecue meatballs which they ate well before half time!  We were all very excited to watch the Ravens win especially after the 30 minute blackout, which caused a lot of anxiety for the fans, even Twitter shut down for a short time.  Blue Ivy’s mom was on fiyah and I enjoyed her performance with Destiny Child but not all of this year’s commercials performed well. Once again, Dorito’s knocked it out of the park with the Goat and “Daddy Princesses; I also liked the Tide “stain”, eTrade baby and Budweiser commercials but missed the one with the Clydesdale horses. The “Go Daddy” ad was disgusting and Dodge Ram was disappointing because of the lack of diversity in their “God Made Farmers” commercial and if I hear that Gangum Style song used again I’ma scream!

I am not a football aficionado so I cannot comment on the actual game, only that I love Ray Rice because I grew up with his mother and aunt in New Rochelle, NY.   Back in the day I dated and almost married his great uncle, Kevin, but that was way before he was born and a story for another time…it’s just a distant memory now….

The game ended late and I didn’t prepare my clothes for the week so once again I hit the back of the closet and pulled out this pantsuit.

Friday at the Flea Market

Last Friday Tayair and I went to Spence’s Bazaar to walk around as well as to see a friend of mine who has a small shop inside one of the buildings.  I didn’t buy anything except a few rings and bracelets but it was fun walking around, seeing odd items including a juke box and a wooden sled.

It was a beautiful end-of-summer day made more so because it was spent with my oldest son

I hadn’t seen a juke box since the last time watching an episode of “Happy Days

After we left the Flea Market I took Tayair to see where I had lived during high school and my first apartment during my college years, both places were vacant!

Our day ended at Papa Johns, Tayair’s favorite food is pizza.  You can tell by looking at him that he had just as much fun with his mom as I did with my son.  It was truly a great day for the both of us, despite it being the anniversary of my sister’s death.
