Tips on Staying Safe in the Summer Heat

Hello friends, I hope you all had a wonderful weekend.  Mine started out great as I presented a Basic Blogging Workshop at the Elsmere Library.  It was a very interactive class and fortunately the library was air conditioned so it was very cool and comfy indoors.

However, by the time the workshop ended the temps outside had risen to cause a statewide excessive heat warning.

If you are in an area affected with this excessive heat, here are a few tips from the Office of Emergency Management to help you keep cool and safe during a summer scorcher.

Basic Tips

  • Stay indoors in air conditioning as much as possible.
  • If you do go outside, stay in the shade.
  • If your home is not air-conditioned, spend at least two hours daily at an air-conditioned mall, library or other public place.
  • Wear sunscreen outside along with loose-fitting, light-colored clothes that cover as much skin as possible.
  • Drink water regularly even if you are not thirsty. Limit alcohol and sugary drinks which speeds dehydration.
  • Never leave children or pets alone in the car.
  • Avoid exertion during the hottest part of the day.
  • Take a cool shower or bath.
  • Make sure to leave plenty of water for your pets.
  • Be a good neighbor, check on elderly and people with disabilities in your community who may need assistance keeping cool.
  • Additionally, residents should contact their local and/or county offices of emergency management regarding any open air-conditioned senior centers or cooling stations.
  • Encourage them to use their AC or help them get to a cool place.
  • Make sure they are drinking enough water.
  • During heat emergencies, NYC Cooling Centers are open.
  • For locations and hours, call 311 or visit www.nyc.gov/oem
Heat Stroke

(Credit: Thinkstock)

What Is It and How Do I Get It? Heat Stroke results from having an abnormally elevated body temperature. Whenever our body works out, it naturally generates heat, which usually escapes through the skin or through the evaporation of sweat. However, when you work out in extreme heat or humidity (or when you work out at a high intensity outside and do not hydrate yourself), the heat your body produces may not be able to dissipate well enough and your body temperature rises, sometimes up to 106°F or higher.

Infants, the elderly, athletes and those who work outside and physically exert themselves under the sun for a living are those at highest risk for heat strokes.

How Do I Know It’s Heat Stroke? Heat stroke symptoms can sometimes mimic those of a heart attack or other conditions. Often, an individual will experience signs of heat exhaustion before the condition escalates to heat stroke. Heat exhaustion symptoms include nausea, fatigue, headache, muscle cramps, dizziness, weakness and vomiting.

Heat stroke symptoms include a high body temperature, the absence of sweating, red or flushed dry skin, rapid pulse, difficulty breathing, hallucinations, disorientation, agitation, seizure and/or coma.

Prevention: Avoid working out in high-temperature or humidity environments. If you cannot avoid physical exertion in these environments, be sure to frequently hydrate yourself to help keep your body temperature down and take breaks as often as possible. Also, avoid drinking caffeine, alcohol or tea, as this may lead to dehydration.

Treatment: Heat stroke is a medical emergency that can lead to brain or organ damage and even death. If you or someone around you is exhibiting symptoms of a heat stroke, immediately call 911.

• While you’re waiting for emergency medical services, get the victim to a shady area, remove clothing, apply cool or warm water to the skin, fan the victim to promote sweating, and place ice packs under the armpits and groin.
• Further treatment must be administered by a trained medical professional.

Sunburn

Anyone who’s spent a long day out in the summer sun is more than likely familiar with sunburn.

How Do I Get It? Sunburn is literally a burn to the skin caused by the sun’s ultraviolet rays and anyone can get it from being out in the sun.

summersafety sunburn Staying Safe In The Summer Heat

(Credit: Thinkstock)

How Do I Know It’s Sunburn? Sunburn is recognized by red or reddish skin in areas that have recently been exposed to the sun. The skin is hot to the touch and often painful. Other symptoms include peeling skin or blisters where the burn was most severe. Individuals with fair or light-colored skin are at a greater risk of sunburn injury.

Prevention: If you’re going to be out in the sun, the best way to protect yourself is to apply sunscreen 15-30 minutes before heading outside.

For the most complete protection, apply a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher that has both UVA and UVB protection to shield your skin from both the sun’s burning rays (UVB rays) and it’s aging rays (UVA rays) that are connected to melanoma skin cancers. If you plan to be active or go in the pool, make sure you use a sweatproof/waterproof sunscreen.

For best application, use about a tablespoon of sunscreen to cover your entire face and ears, and use about a shot glass full to cover each of the other exposed parts of your body. Reapply every three hours.

Treatment:

• Over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen and aspirin are helpful in reducing pain, especially when taken early on.
• Aloe vera gel helps to cool and calm the skin as well as reduce pain and promote healing. The gel forms a protective layer on the skin that seals in valuable moisture, preventing dehydration and promoting faster healing.
• For mild sunburn, cool compresses with equal parts milk and water calm the skin. Apply to the sunburned area for 15-20 minutes at a time.
• Avoid scrubbing or shaving the skin.
• Of course, stay out of the sun while you’re sunburned.

For severe burns, see your doctor.

How are you and the family keeping cool this summer?

iGotTech Magnetic Screen Door Review

Hello friends,

Now that the heat of the summer is over the Stink Bugs have started looking for a warm place to call home, and I need to make sure it’s not mine!  We used to have a screen door installed in the laundry room but last year the wild Winter winds grabbed and tore it off.  Not wanting to install a new door I decided to try the iGotTech Magnetic Screen Door.

Magnetic screen door After ordering and receiving the Screen Door from Amazon.com, I watched the installation video and read a few of the reviews.  Here in Delaware, we have some seriously cold winters and hot humid summers so the Velcro strips and tacks that were included may not be strong enough to hold the screen in place for more than a season.  If we still had an awning, which was also torn away, (see the frame pieces in this picture), it would provide additional protection over the screen making it last longer.

Our house is also located in a “wind tunnel” so we will need to add metal strips around the door frame before attaching the screen.

Hubby agreed to help me with the install, but he had to leave town for the weekend, but if you want to see how to install the iGotTech Magnetic Screen, watch this YouTube video.

Sunday Stylin Roundup

sunday stylin roundup

Hello friends and welcome to another week of Sunday Stylin Roundup.  The last two weeks of summer were fantastic in Delaware, as a matter of fact the entire summer season was fantastic and Autumn is starting out just as nice.

The four outfits being featured this week include a lot of black, but who doesn’t have a lot of black in their closets?

Steel Grey 9 9 14

In this outfit there is a mix of black, beige and steel grey.  The skirt is JCPenney, tank and shoes are thrifted and purse is from Burlington Coat Factory.  The choker has been in my jewelry box for a long time, as a matter of fact, I believe it once belonged to my grandmother.

Black and Blue 9 11 14

I hadn’t done much shopping during the summer, however, this dress was one that I did buy at Ross.  The Buddha Bag was purchased last year during Shop Small Business Saturday, and the Mia heels are from The Shoe Dept in the Exton Mall. The necklace was a Flea market find and the bracelet was $1.25 from Burlington Coat Factory.

Blue By Pool Leaves falling on the pool deck made for a perfect backdrop for this Blue by the Pool outfit.  This is another skirt from JCPenney, top from Marshall’s and I won the necklace from a fellow blogger.  The thrifted beige pumps and bracelet from Old Navy completes the look.

I love turquoise blue – how about you?

In the last outfit you can tell that the temperatures are beginning to change as did my wardrobe.  I will be wearing more long sleeves, blazers and cardigans so I spent more than 6 hours last Saturday in my closet, check out these before and after pics.

Unfortunately, I still have the spare bedroom to clear out – I had bags and bags of items to be donated to Goodwill – “Donate Stuff Create Jobs!”

I am not ready to cover my tootsies or wear tights, so I will continue wearing peep-toe shoes until the first snow fall.

How about you, are you ready to pull on the boots or shop for more summer styles?  If you want to shop for more, go check out the sales at Shoedazzle or the BUY ONE GET ONE FREE SALE at JustFAB

Weekend Wind-Down Party #28 – Hello August

Hello friends, I hope all is well in your world.

So long summer…can you believe today is the first Friday in August…time sure is flying by way too fast. I was actually behind several school buses yesterday morning, the kids didn’t look too happy but I bet their parents were!!! As you know, we have two sons heading off to college with Malik staying on campus, and there are a few items that I need to get for his dorm room. Bowie sent a brochure from Campus Market to help parents order the necessary bed and bath items that they may need. I drive past a Christmas Tree Shop, Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, Burlington Coat Factory and Ross everyday.  If I can’t purchase what he needs from one of these stores it won’t get got, because we don’t pay a sales tax in Delaware. Staying Corporate Casual Cool in the Summer Sizzle

Hello friends, I hope all is well in your world.

The heat is on and the struggle continues, dressing Corporate Casual in July and August while staying cool can be challenging.  However, wearing a sheath dress is just one way that keeps me cool all summer long.

A sheath dress is very transitional, in the early Spring and Autumn I will wear a blazer or cardigan over top, and because of the scoop neck in the Winter I’ll wear a turtleneck underneath.  But in the heat of the Summer it’s just cotton undergarments and open toe-sandals!

It can be difficult to stay cool when the temps rise above 80 degrees but just thinking about last winter’s snow storm helps! maximum heat

Summer Sheath dresses

Summer Sheath dresses

Burlington Coat Factory has a large selection of sheath dresses and they are all reasonably priced.  However, Ross Dress for Less and of course Goodwill are other places that I’ve also found a good selection of them.

The best thing about a sheath dress is that it’s flattering to all shapes and sizes and can be worn by woman of any age.  Patterns makes it easy to accessorize as not much is needed when the print is busy.

Staying cool in Corporate Casual during the summer sizzle is a breeze if I wear light, loose fitting fabric that allows air circulation, is sleeveless and a pair open toe sandals and for that I am thankful!

How about you, do you love sheath dresses as much as I?  If so, I’d love to see a pic so send one and then at the end of the month I’ll do a Summer Sheath Sizzle Roundup” which will include a surprise GIVEAWAY

This week I am thankful for my family, my friends and of course my faith. I am thankful that my son is home and recovering nicely and I am thankful for a cool breeze every now and then!

Now it’s your turn, what are you thankful for this week?

Midnight Brunch at the Marina | #sp Giveaway

Hello Friends, when you’re heading out for brunch with hubby or lunch with the ladies do you find choosing just the right thing to wear a daunting task? Do you open your closet door, stare inside and say, “I have nothing to wear?”  Well when hubby and I decided to head to Aqua Sol for Sunday Brunch, I knew exactly what I was going to wear.

Polka Dot Sheath

This Polka Dot Sheath dress from Midnight Velvet was perfect for an afternoon at the Marina.  Sleeveless with a side zipper made it comfortable enough for sitting in the sun and the polyester/spandex blend made it stretchable enough to enjoy a meal without it being too tight afterwards.

@ShopMV Dress Review As part of Midnight Velvet’s Summer 2014 catalog this dress is definitely a confident summer style with pizzazz.  The side pockets were a nice added feature and perfectly sized to drop in my cell phone.

The countdown is on, there are only two more weekends until the Memorial Day holiday which is the unofficial start to summer!!!!  Next week my “baby” graduates from High School and if you read yesterday’s post or follow me on FB/Twitter/Google+/Instagram or Pinterest you would have seen a picture of him holding his acceptance letter to Bowie State University – if not, here it is

BTW, I won’t be able to participate in next weekend’s party so please link up from one of the other host’s blogs.

Cool Pool Blue Monday| OOTD

Hello Friends and Happy Monday

I am getting so excited in anticipation for the heat of the summer as I’m sure a few of you are as well.  Last week it was still a bit cool but the weekend more than made up for it with temps in the 80’s.  I can’t wait until it’s officially pool time in just a few short weeks!

Today’s outfit is a combination of JCPenney, Citi Trends, Avon and Target.

The Peplum top is JC Penney, and I was never a big fan of them because I didn’t think they were flattering to my figure – what do you think?

The black patent leather Mossimo pumps are from Tar’jay (Target).  This is the outfit that I wore to work and later on that evening for teaching a Blogging 101 class at the Bear Library.  It was very comfortable all day and worked well for both environments.
