The summer season has finally come to a close. Now the fall breeze will sweep in as the rest of fall culture begins to take hold. Between the behemoth of summer vacation and the ever expanding snowy period of Christmas time, the wonders of fall may get lost in the mix. Here are a few reasons why fall isn’t just as great as summer and winter, but perhaps even better!
1. Fall picnics
A sweeping field in a park during the fall wouldn’t be complete without a pleasant picnic out on the cool grass. Having a picnic is basically a rite of passage as we go into the fall. Such a thing is not only a wonderfully romantic pastime, but also a great activity for families to enjoy a meal in the fresh air. Having a meal outside can come with a crop of safety concerns though. Be smart about your picnic and check out some great safety tips here.
2. Nature changes colors
Not that there isn’t something refreshing about a sea of vibrant green leaves, but little can compare, in terms of beauty, to an ever-changing forest of yellows, oranges, and reds. If you live near a mountain, take a look at it in the fall. Chances are, it will look like a gargantuan painting of rich and vibrant colors. There is also much fun to be had with this beauty. Jumping into a pile of fallen leaves with friends or family can make for a joyful time.
3. It finally cools down
The blistering heat of the summer time has finally come to an end. Coming in to replace it will be a cool fall breeze and a pleasant temperature that will make going outside fun again, before the bitter cold of winter finally takes hold. The innocuous chilly air makes for a great reason to cuddle on a park bench. This also means that hot drinks will become a comfortable beverage once again, because a hot coco on a fall evening will warm you to the core in the most wonderful way.
4. Hay rides
There is only one time of year that one gets to partake in the innocent joys of a hay ride through the countryside, and that would be the fall season. This is the perfect activity to enjoy with a close sweetheart, or to take with a close friend who will fill the ride with laughter. A hay ride is a great way to have a nostalgic, community-based experience on a fall afternoon.
5. Halloween
The start of fall signifies the kick off of Halloween season, which may well be the best holiday of the year. Despite its origins, the modern day incarnation of Halloween is a holiday for everyone, rather than a religious holiday that is restrictive to one demographic of the population. This time of year brings scary movies, fun costumes, and even the opportunity to go on a spooky ghost hunt. To those who get burned out by the stress that many other holidays bring, Halloween is their favorite holiday!
6. Thanksgiving
No matter how fun Halloween can be, that’s not all that the fall season brings! Thanksgiving, apart from offering what may be the best meal you have all year, is the culmination of almost everything fall related. It’s a low-key, earthy holiday that brings people together to remind them of all in their life that they have to be thankful for. It has the same themes of family and togetherness as a holiday like Christmas, but without all the consumerist headaches.
7. Pumpkins
The September-October period brings the harvest season of one of the healthiest and most versatile vegetables that can be had, Pumpkins. This soulful delicacy can be enjoyed pies, soups, coffees, beers, and even just served up all on its own. All of these things especially popular in the fall. Eating pumpkins can improve your eyesight, and the seeds even reduce your cholesterol. They are also a wonderful addition to the fall festivities, as no Halloween night would be complete without an assortment of jack-o-lanterns to light the way.
8. Fall Fashion
Fashion during the summertime is often a way of finding out how much you can get away with wearing as little as you can. And there really isn’t much of an option, because it is devilishly hot. When fall hits, the options really open up! Fall fashion brings back scarves and jackets, as well as leggings and boots. The colors that come back in are also fun and calming all at once; a very earthy palette.
9. Camping is even better
Much more of your day is bearable to spend outside in the fall, after the heat loses its edge. This means that camping is a much more enjoyable activity during this time of year. The less you are experiencing exhaustion from the sun, the more you can spend doing things outdoors that are actually fun. Fall is the perfect time to warm up by the fire, as the night brings a calming cool with it. Also, nature is absolutely stunning in the fall time, meaning your trip will be filled with even more beauty.
10. Apple Season
Apple season and fall season pretty much kick off at the exact same time. This means all sorts of goodies of the apple variety will be available to enjoy. Taking a walk in an orchard during apple season can be great activity to do with the family, and it comes with a tasty snack. A date to a cider mill can also make for a lovely time. And apple cider donuts may be the best dessert that one can get in this hemisphere!

There’s a nip in the air and the holidays are right around the corner, so now is the best time to break out the Crock Pot and begin making some wonderful meals for the family. Cooking in the Crock Pot not only saves you time in the kitchen but it can also create fun family memories.
I am a night owl so when the boys were younger, I enjoyed staying up late to do chores and prepare meals for the following day. One of my favorite slow cooked meals was breakfast frittatas. It was great because the boys would help me shop for the ingredients then put them all into the Crock Pot. The only problem with this slow cooked breakfast is the aroma; the wonderful smell would always wake us up earlier then we had planned on rising. The boys couldn’t wait to rush downstairs to eat and then head back to bed for a few more hours of sleep.
Safewayis having a Stock Up sale on Pace Picante Sauces and Salsas so I headed over to pick up a few jars to make my Crock Pot Breakfast Frittata for last Sunday’s brunch. Pace Picante kicks up the flavor in this breakfast meal and with the 16 oz varieties being on sale at Safeway for 2/$4, it was the perfect time to stock up.
Family breakfast doesn’t have to be boring bowl of cereal and if you make this the night before it will free from the stove giving you more family fun time around the table. As you know, both of my sons are now in college and with time flying by so quickly, spending as much time with them is important especially during the holidays.Ingredients:
1 – 16 oz package frozen spinach, thawed and drained
1 Jar Pace Picante Sauce
8 eggs beaten
1 – 20 oz package cooked Hash browns
1 package pre-cooked sausage (links or patties diced or crumbled sausage)
1/2 cup shredded cheese
1/2 cup scallions diced
Cooking Spray
Directions:
Spray the Crock Pot generously with cooking spray
Place spinach, hash browns, sausage, scallions, beaten eggs, and Picante Sauce into Crock Pot. Toss slightly to mix all ingredients then top with shredded cheese.
If cooking overnight use the 6 hour setting or cook 2-3 hours on high if preparing in the morning, check to ensure it is well set. Allow the breakfast frittata to cool slightly before cutting into equal square portions, serve with a breakfast biscuit or an English Muffin.
Note: You can freeze leftovers or reheat in the microwave for 30-45 seconds.

This Slow Cooked Breakfast Frittata is by far one of our favorite family holiday meals and a tradition that I hope my boys will continue with their own families.

Last week I attended a 2 Day eCommerce Sales and Marketing Workshop jointly sponsored by Downtown Delaware, the Delaware Emerging Technology Center, all programs within DEDO and USDA Rural Development held on the campus of Delaware Technical Community College in Dover.
This no cost education and training program provided small business owners a comprehensive array of eCommerce and Social Media information. There was more than enough information provided to aid in either establishing an eCommerce business or to supplement current internet sales practices.
The eCommerce Marketing Workshop was jam packed with presentations from experts in all things social media and eCommerce. Their primary goal was not only to inform and educate but to also provide strategic uses of social media tools in order to sell products and market our businesses.

Ken Anderson, Director, Entrepreneurial & Small Business Support for the Delaware Economic Development Office, (DEDO) kicked off each morning with a warm welcome and gave us all an opportunity to introduce ourselves then later allocated time for a “5 minute shameless plug” for those who wanted to promote their business.
Throughout the day there were several Raffle drawings, giveaways, product samples and a networking table full of displays and business cards. The Continental breakfast, lunch buffets, mid-morning and afternoon snacks really kept our energy levels high as we listened to various topics ranging from “How to Get Started Selling Online” to “Loans, Grants, Free Money and How the Government Can Help Your Business”.
Governor Jack Markellstopped in for a few minutes to offer words of encouragement and acknowledge the hard work and dedication of small business owners who make a significant impact in today’s economy. The Governor is a huge supporter of entrepreneurs and small business owners in the State of Delaware, we all appreciate his support and always look forward to seeing him at these workshops and other business events.
At the end of Day 2 we were each presented with a Certificate of Achievement then we all got together and took this great group photo. The eCommerce Sales and Marketing Training was a wonderful event that will greatly assist in the success of online marketing for many of the small business owners in attendance.

Amazon never ceases to amaze me, once a little start up selling books over the Internet founded by Jeff Bezos in 1994, then launched in 1995; now has on-site classroom training available at several of their fulfillment centers including the one in our little town of Middletown.
Employees of Amazon who wish to continue their education can now do so right after work, which for many is very convenient especially after working a 10 hour shift. Instead of driving miles to a local Del Tech campus, they can simply clock out after their shift is done then walk down the hall to their classroom.
The Delaware facility is just one of only eight Amazon fulfillment centersto offer on-site classroom instruction for their workers and it definitely benefits many of our state’s residents.
Amazon’s Career Choice education program launched in 2012, gives it’s employees an incentive to pursue a degree or certification program because they pre-pay up to $3000.00 per year for tuition, textbooks and college fees even if they chose to attend another college or university.
We all know how expensive college can be so this is definitely a great opportunity for many even if they decide to stay on at Amazon or leave to pursue other career choices.
In order to qualify for the Career Choice Program, Amazon workers must be employed at the company for at least a year. Workers must also enroll in a degree or certification program that prepares them for a career designated as “high demand” by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Delaware Tech and Amazon are now in talks to provide credit courses on site, possibly starting in 2016.

In celebration of my 54th Birthday last month and in anticipation of Crocktober I wanted to try a new Crock Pot recipe. I found one online at Billy Parisi’s website and put my own little twist onto it to make this easy and inexpensive meal which was by far more flavorful than I anticipated.
Cook the chicken thighs in a little olive or vegetable oil until browned, as this will add more color and flavor to the dish.
Put all ingredients into a slow cooker coated with cooking spray and cook on low for 6 hours or high for 4 hours. Before serving sprinkle on a little salt and pepper to taste then serve over cooked brown rice and garnish with Feta cheese.
This was such a flavorful dish that both my son and I went back for seconds and it was more than enough for leftovers for the following day.

On a warm end of the summer casual Friday, I wore my favorite white pants for only the second time in the season. Not only was I cool, comfy and casual, I didn’t spill a thing on them and you know that I am afraid to wear white – remember this post?
